Hello, I am an on-site engineer for an ISP in Massachusetts, we currently are using a Ascend Max 4004 for dial up accounts. I am trying to configure a Digital solution for dial-up, using a DS700 and a Zoom modem Model 2836. I have worked with support and have a configured a stable PPP connection. My problem is the DS700 connection transfers data at a much slower rate than the Max connection. Here is the server and port config for DS700 and the modem setup. If you have any ideas I would appreciate them Server Network Access SW V2.0 for DS700-08 BL10C-40 ROM V4.0-0 Uptime: 0 04:08:51 Address: 08-00-2B-3B-FB-0D Name: DS700_EXT Number: 0 Identification: Circuit Timer: 80 Password Limit: 3 Console Port: 1 Prompt: ds700_ext> Inactivity Timer: 30 Queue Limit: 100 Keepalive Timer: 20 Retransmit Limit: 8 Multicast Timer: 30 Session Limit: 64 Node Limit: 200 Software: WWENG2 Service Groups: 0 Enabled Characteristics: Announcements, Broadcast, Dump, Lock Port 8: Server: DS700_EXT Character Size: 8 Input Speed: 9600 Flow Control: CTS Output Speed: 9600 Parity: None Modem Control: Enabled Stop Bits: Dynamic Access: Local Local Switch: None Backwards Switch: None Name: PORT_8 Break: Disabled Session Limit: 4 Forwards Switch: None Type: Ansi Default Protocol: PPP Default Menu: None Dialer Script: None Dedicated Service: PPP Authorized Groups: 0 (Current) Groups: 0 Enabled Characteristics: Autobaud, Autoconnect, Autoprompt, Broadcast, Failover, Input Flow Control, Lock, Loss Notification, Message Codes, Output Flow Control, PPP, Verification Port 8: Server: DS700_EXT IPCP Characteristics: IPCP: Enabled Passive Open: Disabled Restart Timer: 3 seconds Max Configure: 10 transmissions Max Terminate: 2 transmissions Max Failure: 10 transmissions IPCP Options: Local: Negotiate Address: Enabled Remote IP Address: 207.78.0.18 Compress Header: Disabled Compress States: 16 Modem AT&V ACTIVE PROFILE: B1 E1 L1 M1 N1 Q0 T V1 W0 X4 Y0 &C1 &D3 &G0 &J0 &K3 &Q5 &R1 &S1 &T5 &X0 &Y0 S00:001 S01:000 S02:043 S03:013 S04:010 S05:008 S06:002 S07:050 S08:002 S09:006 S10:014 S11:095 S12:050 S18:000 S25:005 S26:001 S36:007 S37:000 S38:020 S44:020 S46:138 S48:007 S95:000 STORED PROFILE 0: B1 E1 L1 M1 N1 Q0 T V1 W0 X4 Y0 &C1 &D3 &G0 &J0 &K3 &Q5 &R1 &S1 &T5 &X0 S00:001 S02:043 S06:002 S07:050 S08:002 S09:006 S10:014 S11:095 S12:050 S18:000 S36:007 S37:000 S40:168 S41:195 S46:138 S95:000 STORED PROFILE 1: B1 E1 L1 M1 N1 Q0 T V1 W0 X4 Y0 &C0 &D0 &G0 &J0 &K3 &Q5 &R1 &S0 &T5 &X0 S00:000 S02:043 S06:002 S07:050 S08:002 S09:006 S10:014 S11:095 S12:050 S18:000 S36:007 S37:000 S40:168 S41:195 S46:138 S95:000 TELEPHONE NUMBERS: 0= 1= 2= 3= OK Thanks Mike Mastroianni [Posted by WWW Notes gateway]

535.1 | Port speed is the problem | CLOPAY::PYRIK | Dan Pyrik | Tue Apr 08 1997 17:25 | 5 |
Your input and output speeds for port 8 are set at 9600. A DS700 can support speeds up to 115200. You can issue the command CHANGE PORT 8 SPEED 115200 or you can use the Access Server Manager to change the port speed. Good luck, Dan Pyrik
535.2 | Additional steps -- or use ASM. | IROCZ::D_NELSON | Dave Nelson LKG1-3/A11 226-5358 | Wed Apr 09 1997 11:58 | 19 |
RE: .1 > You can issue the command CHANGE PORT 8 SPEED 115200... You will also need the command CHANGE PORT 8 AUTOBAUD DISABLED. You must then make a "reverse" connection from the port to the modem (LAT or Telnet), allowing the modem to autobaud to the DECserver's port speed (115,200) and then force the momed to "lock" at this DTE-side baud rate. Note this is independent of the telephone line baud rate. > or you can use the Access Server Manager to change the port speed. Which will do all the additional things I've mentioned! One more thing: do a LIST PORT x LCP and confirm the "Character Map" setting is not FFFFFFFF. Since you're using hardware flow control, the best setting for this value would be 0. Any bit set in this map tells the DECserver to handle the corresponding character in a special manner which effectively doubles the required bandwidth, not to mention the extra interrupt handling overhead. 535.4 | ASM helped, but still not as fast... | MIPSBX::"[email protected]" | Mike Mastroianni | Mon Apr 14 1997 12:21 | 14 |
Thanks for you responses to this problem, I pulled down the ASM V2.2, "this product is terrific" and configured my DS700. Transfers work much faster now, and the port speed connects at 115,000. But if I connect to the Max4004, and pull down a 1.5MB file, it transfers at 2.9 to 3.0Kb/sec, on the DS700 (same file, same modem speed-26400), it comes down at 2.4 to 2.6Kb/sec. This is not a major issue for me, but if you have any thoughts I would be interested in them Thanks again for the help Mike Mastroianni [Posted by WWW Notes gateway]
535.5 | Compression? | IROCZ::D_NELSON | Dave Nelson LKG1-3/A11 226-5358 | Tue Apr 15 1997 14:17 | 14 |
RE: .4 > ...it comes down at 2.4 to 2.6Kb/sec. Have the modems sucessfully negotiated some form of data comopression, e.g. V.42bis? I realize that this should be the same for the DECserver and the Ascend MAX. I note that 2.6 Kb/sec (and I assume you mean _bytes_ here) is about the raw modem speed of 26Kb/sec (where I mean _bits_). How "compessable" is the data? Regards, Dave |
