Hi, I am confronted with a customer who is very disappointed about DECACB because no real support for IP and PPP. So he is asking for an alternative, I hope Netrider can help but what I am missing is the complete glue how this all can work. Customer requirements : Login with IP by the use of PPP from a Windows 3.1 PC where Pathworks 5.0 is running on. He would like to logon in a secure way and he need the callback feature. From his experience with DECACB he has already the following hardware, Multitech modems,a DECserver 90M (NAS 1.4 and ROM 4.1) and two AXP's. Can somebody explain me how this can be realized with Netrider, which components and versions that need to installed at which place? Some configuration examples would be helpfull ? Yves DTN: 856-7835

I'm a little fuzzy now on the features of Pathworks Remote. I know PPP dial-up access is supported. I _presume_ some form of PPP authentication is supported, such as PAP or CHAP. This is all you need to dial up, use PPP, access the network securely, and get IP connectivity. I don't know if Pathworks Remote supports the PPP LCP Callback option. As to the NetRider PC clients, we're phasing them out. With the advent of Windows 95 and the inclusion of AppleTalk over PPP dial-up access in MacOS (V-mumble), the market for "third-party" clients is dwindling. Assuming you can still get the Stampede-based NetRider Client for Windows, you can get PPP, PAP, CHAP and LCP Callback. We dropped Pathworks support in the latest NetRider client, for lack of a protected mode IP stack. The NetRider Windows client comes with a protected mode stack from FTP Software. Might I suggest Windows 95? (Before we get Windows 2000?) :-) Regards, Dave |
