874.0. "routeabouts and RFC877 where is it documented" by CX3PST::NOTAMI::A_ANDERSON (CX03 2/H13 NSU/VAX MacGhille Aindrais) Thu Apr 24 1997 22:43

    Hello All,

I am working with a customer who is attempting to configure a
routeabout for Ip over X.25. I have spent the last two hours looking
through the PDF doc set and I cannot locate any information at all on
this subject. If its there its well hidden.

It looks like the customer has it configured properly. Well he has a
IP address mapped to a DTE address and its pointing to the correct
prot number (I am guessing this is short for protocol). The X.25
provider says the link is up but when the customer attempts to ping the
remote site no call is placed (according to the X.25 provider). The
    event log reports:

    IP.006: pkt 10.35.249.253 -> 10.35.249.254 dsc rsn 5, nt 1 int X25/0

Which basically says the other side is not responding. Which makes
sense since the routeabout never places the call.

    So a couple of questions.

    1. Where is RFC877 documented in the routeabout manuals. I have the
following Acrobate docs, and have looked through them all.

    CFG_V20 PDF
    NIOGV20 PDF
    PREFV20 PDF
    PUSRV20 PDF
    SSG_V20 PDF
    BRDGV20 PDF
    SNA_V20 PDF
    EVNTV20 PDF

    2. Does setting a x25 address translation accomplish Ip over X.25 or
(RFC877) is there more to it? Like setting up some sort of template
for the outgoing call to use the correct protocol ID? Or does using a
IP address in the address translation automatically accomplish this?

I know this is a more than likely a case of RTFM but I have and I cannot
locate any info on configuring RCF877 on a routeabout. The SPD says
its supported but that all I can find.

    Thanks for any hints
    Alan S. Anderson

RFC 877 specifies the way that IP packets are encapsulated over
an X.25 datalink. To use IP over X.25 you need to follow the
procedures for configuring X.25 in the Network Interface Operations
	Guide.

	Basically there are four steps:

	(1) Assign an IP address/mask to the X25 interface, eg X25/0
	(2) ADD PROT IP via the X.25 configurator
	(3) ADD ADDRESS for the IP protocol via the X.25 configurator.
	(4) If the destination network is not directly reachable over X25,
add a static route that points to a router that is connected
via X25 and use steps 1-3 to get to that router.

In your case you should just need 1-3. Step 2 is the step that
defines the call parameters ( a bit like a template), including
	use of compression.

If you still have problems, then enable X25 and X253 events. That
	should provide some more details.
