869.0. "Problems using 10Mb ports in VNswitch 900EX" by TIMAMD::RODRIGUEZ () Tue Apr 22 1997 13:14

There is a problem with the 10Mb ports in VNswitch 900EX

This is the configuration:

DEChub 900 (V5.0)
1 x VNswitch 900EX (V1.5-001)
3 x DECrepeater 900TM (V2.0))

The customer has a WNT server connected to a 100Mb port.
When a PC using W95 is directly connected to a 10 Mb port, the PC logon
doesn't run and it`s not able to browse the network

A second attempt to run the logon procedure or browse the network, works
fine.

This behavior doesn't happen if the 10Mbp port is configured internally
and the PC is connected to this port through a DECrepeater 900TM.

I think you may be not waiting long enough after plugging the PC into
the 10Mb front panel port. When you plug any system into a front panel
port this causes the port to become operational - it then must go through
30 seconds of spanning tree state machine before the port can forward
packets. So, after plugging in the PC you must wait at least 30 seconds
before expecting any reachibility to/from the PC. When you plug the
PC into the repeater you don't have the same wait because the VNswitch
port is up already.

    Chris,

You're right. I've disabled spanning tree on that front panel ports
where just one PC is connected and they reach the network at the
    first attempt.

    Thanks,
    Juan-Jos.
