810.0. "What is the BOOT BLOCK image out there?" by PTOJJD::DANZAK (Pittsburgher ) Thu Mar 20 1997 07:38

What is this "boot block" image on the FIRMWARE page for the VNswitch?

What do I do with it? How do I know when I should do something with
    it?

The "boot block" is a VNswitch image separate from the operational image.
It contains the core diagnostics and primive load capabilities. If the
operational firmware image ever gets corrupted (maybe from a power outage
during an image upgrade), then the boot block will detect this and request
(via bootp and tftp) that a new operational image be loaded.

Boot block images can be upgraded in a VNswitch just like the operational image.

When do you know to upgrade the boot block? The release notes for each
operational release will say what version of the boot block is required.
