802.0. "Quick Ref Guides" by BSS::DUNHAM () Fri Mar 14 1997 11:17

    	I have not been able to find and Quick Referene Guides at this
    location for V2.0. Have the been omitted or are we not producing them
    anymore?

802.1Still shipped with the boxesMARVIN::WALTERFri Mar 14 1997 11:585
	The cards certainly are still produced - in fact there are
	new ones.

	I assume they are in some strange format that makes them difficult
	to put into on-line docs.
802.2Cards are printedKEEF::PETERSMon Mar 17 1997 05:027
    Walter is right. The quick reference cards were produced in hard copy
    only, and are distributed with the hardware.

    For V3 we intend to combine the cards into a quick reference booklet,
    which again will be distributed in hard copy format only.

802.3What prevents these from being accessible on-line?NETCAD::BATTERSBYMon Mar 17 1997 10:205
    Just out of curiosity, what is the difficulty encountered that
    prevents these quick-ref guides from being able to be made
    available in a format that would make them accessible on-line?

    Bob
802.4They are not on-line because they are CARDSKEEF::PETERSMon Mar 17 1997 11:2130
    > Just out of curiosity, what is the difficulty encountered that
    > prevents these quick-ref guides from being able to be made
    > available in a format that would make them accessible on-line?

    Bob,

    Since you asked ... briefly, the difficulty is that the on-line format
    we use (Dynatext) has very stringent formatting requirements, which
    demand standard definitions for every paragraph style, and every
    character change from the default (bolding, italics, underlines, font
    changes etc), plus restrictions on the artwork. The layouts work in
    print, but do not meet the technical requirements of Dynatext.

    The manuals were laboriously converted because they needed to be in
    that form. The cards were not converted because they were never
    supposed to be done. The cards were designed and intended for use as
    printed cards only.

    Now it would take someone weeks of mind-bendingly dull editing to
    change the formats of every paragraph style and character style change
    to comply with the requirements for on-line production. Take a look at
    the cards to see what is involved!

    There is too much else to do, and no spare resources for this task. If
    I reformat the cards, the V3 manuals will not cover the new
    functionality.

802.5Understand now....thanks for explanationNETCAD::BATTERSBYMon Mar 17 1997 13:0311
    Thanks Steve, for the brief and informative explanation of
    the Q/R cards and why they don't easily format in Dynatext.
    I was simply curious as to what the primary inhibition was
    to making this information electronically available. It seemed
    like everything else these days is electronically avasilable
    in some form, whether it be html, Dynatext, etc. Nevertheless I
    am keenly aware of the priority of resources, and agree 100%
    that it wouldn't be worth taking time away from something else
    to do it.

I would not spend a lot of time making them Dynatext format.
but, why can't you make them available in some other format
such as PostScript or PDF ? In reality, if these are not
available on-line then they will not get read nor used by
engineering or field support I suspect - since we rarely
get our hands on hardcopy.

802.7CSC's deal with little "hard-copy" form these days....NETCAD::BATTERSBYMon Mar 17 1997 16:0812
    >> In reality, if these are not

    >>get our hands on hardcopy.

    That was at the core of why I asked my question, prompted
    by the question of availability asked in the base note.
    IE: are we losing some information exchange/help to our
    customers by not making this information available in an
    electronic form which would/could supplant the hard-copy form?

    Bob
802.8OK, I'll see what I can do for youKEEF::PETERSTue Mar 18 1997 05:388
    I don't have the V2.0 .PS files for the quick reference cards, but I'll
    see if I can get them from the team that submitted them. The files
    that I do have have some minor differences, so I'd rather get the
    original files for you.

    I'll be back!

802.9PS/PDF versions of QRCs now availableKEEF::PETERSThu Mar 20 1997 06:449
    I have now added zip files containing the Quick Reference cards in
    Postscript form and PDF form. You will find them in the table of files
    under the heading Adobe Acrobat Version.

The correct url seems to be:

    Thanks Pete,

    That was inexcusable. How many mistakes did you manage to spot in the
    "url" in .9?  I stopped looking after I found 3. Let's try again . . .

    The V2.0 docs can be found in a selection of your favourite formats at:
