| The DECNIS is refusing to accept the MAGIC NUMBER option in the LCP startup. Set
the Magic Number Loop Count attribute on the DECNIS PPP link to a non-zero value
(say 3).
Magic number negotiation is supposed to have a few goes then give up, perhaps
the sequence takes so long the ISDN link is bounced, this probably wouldn't
matter on a leased line but would be fatal to an ISDN setup.

| Or you can disable magic number on the RouteAbout end.
RouteAbout is kind of brain-dead in this regards, it will ask for magic
number 20 times before it finally gives up!

According to the decnis configurator this is a read only attribute.
I've also disabled magic number on the Routeabout but the result is

| You need to have installed V4.0 or fix kit V3.1-8 of the DECNIS (new image and
new VAX/VMS script compiler) to get magic-number support on the DECNIS.

| Did you restart the RouteAbout after disabling magic number? I'm
really surprised that it would send the option after you disabled it --
that's a bug.
From your trace magic number does appear to be the problem, but
sometimes MRU will cause problems when connecting to DECnis. There is
a release note detailing this -- on an FDDI DECnis, you need to set the
bridge port and PPP link SDU sizes lower.

I've restarted the RA but it seems it always sends magic numbers so
this is a bug. I've tried increasing magic number loop count
(upgraded the decnis from 3.1-7 to 3.18) but its still no go. This
decnis is not connected to fddi so sdu size should be no problem.
Remember that the serial line interface works fine with the same
settings on the decnis.
The problem occurs only when i try to use isdn. I thought there would
only be a switch on datalink level to use ISDN but it seems there is
more to it.
I will try to see what happens on version 1.1 on the routeabout. I
discovered that BOOTP on version 2.0 DOES NOT work if you use numbered
IP links so version 2.0 is not usable for us.

| Problem found !
It seems the terminal adapter on the decnis side is faulty. Swpped it
with an other one and it works. Downgraded the Routeabout to 1.1 and
Bootp-relay also works.

I'm suspicious of this, its possible that the TA setups are different and you
are now not seeing the call drop when the magic number negotiation times out.
Would it be possible to compare the two TA settings to see if there is anything
different?

There's not really much you can set ont his TA. You just select a
profile for selecting sync or async and the line speed and that's all.
If seen strange data link behaviour on this TA before so i really think
it's a hardware problem.
By the way does anybody know if there is a patch or new image for the
BOOTP problem on numbered links ?
