10068.0. "LSM and newfs" by SYSTEM::HELLIAR (http://samedi.reo.dec.com/) Fri Jun 06 1997 10:04

I tried to setup LSM on my system and encapsulate some existing
disks...along the way I had various failures and retries and now Im at
the stage where I dont understand whats going on.

Basically, I have 4 partitions rz2e, and rz3g are intended for user
partitions, rz2a, and rz3h are intended to be used as raw devides for
an Informix database. I have set up the following:

    # volprint
TYPE NAME ASSOC KSTATE LENGTH COMMENT
    dg rootdg rootdg - -
    dm disk01 rz2a - 130544
    dm disk02 rz2e - 1657132
    dm disk03 rz3g - 818688
    dm disk04 rz3h - 837932
    sd disk01-01 vol-disk01-01 - 130544
    sd disk02-01 vol-disk02-01 - 1657132
    sd disk03-01 vol-disk03-01 - 818688
    sd disk04-01 vol-disk04-01 - 837932
    plex vol-disk01-01 vol-disk01 ENABLED 130544
    plex vol-disk02-01 vol-disk02 ENABLED 1657132
    plex vol-disk03-01 vol-disk03 ENABLED 818688
    plex vol-disk04-01 vol-disk04 ENABLED 837932
    vol vol-disk01 fsgen ENABLED 130544
    vol vol-disk02 fsgen ENABLED 1657132
    vol vol-disk03 fsgen ENABLED 818688
    vol vol-disk04 fsgen ENABLED 837932

So, disk01 and disk04 are the raw devices and disk02, and disk03 are
the cooked file systems...or at least thats what I would like.

When I try to mount them I get:

    # mount /dev/vol/rootdg/vol-disk02 /usera
/dev/vol/rootdg/vol-disk02 on /usera: No valid filesystem exists on
    this partition

orginally there was a UFS system on this partition and disklabel still
admits to it, but somewhere during my struggles with LSM I have lost
    it.

Unfortunely, if I try to recreate the file system, I get:

    # newfs /dev/vol/rootdg/vol-disk02
    newfs: /dev/vol/rootdg/vol-disk02: no default #tracks

Even trying the -t option to specify my oen number of tracks does not
    affect the error from newfs.

    What am I missing?

P.S. I cant run the X/Windows LSM utility as I dont have a license,
and the wonderful corperate PAK system now only works for US employees!
This is an internal system and I am not worried about loosing data on
these partitions to get this thing working.
