Hi all, I am not sure whether this is the right place to ask, but I hope someone can help me to move from here. One of my customers wants to know whether RZ1DB-SB, our 9 GB ultr wide SCSI SCA2, can be used for Alpha Server 4000. If can, is there any other things that he needs to have. If not, is there any plan in the future to support this. regards, nazeli

Platform groups decide what they support. So you really need to ask the platform group. In general, I'll repeat, the S/W supports the SCSI-2 standard; and by extension, any device that fully complies with the SCSI-2 standard. Last I knew, the disk qual group had every intention of verifying that the RZ1DB disks DID fully comply with the SCSI-2 standard, and therefore they would be supported by the S/W (when that verification is complete). That then leaves you with the H/W question which you must ask the platform group. Remember, they have FCC compliance (radiated emissions), and other issues to deal with that we in S/W don't need to worry about. Fred Knight
10006.2 | rz1db-sb not supported | MSAM03::NAZELI | Tue Jun 03 1997 23:22 | 6
Thanks Fred, I just got the answer from the platform group. It is supported for VW variant with BA356 but not SB variant ( I guess it is only for Alpha server 800). Regards, Nazeli
10006.3 | What disktab def for 9Gb disk ? | NCMAIL::CLAUSON | Fri Jun 06 1997 00:27 | 11
Hi, I have a followup question for DUNIX support of these drives. I have a customer replacing a number of RZ29B-VWs with the new 9Gb disks. These disks are connected to HSZ40s in an SW500 cab. When creating new file systems (they use UFS) for their RAID-5 sets, they were using the RZ29B disk geometry definition from the disktab file. What should he use for the 9Gb drives ? The disktab file (dunix V4.0a) does not have entries for rz40 or rz1db. thanks
10006.4 | use disklabel HSZ40 | KYOSS1::GREEN | Fri Jun 06 1997 09:45 | 5
Normally you would use disklabel -wr HSZxx and allow the HSZ to send the geometry. My understanding is the when RAID controller (HSZ,SWXCR etc) is involved you would not put "rzanything" as an argument to "disklabel". dick |
