9975.0. "Max logins and SPD Digital UNIX 4.x" by SEPPLT::MARK (Mark Garrett) Thu May 29 1997 07:06

The current SPD for digital unix including 4.0C have telnet logins
listed as max 2048. While I can accept that there is a limit
on the number of BSD style ptys for login purpose. I can find no reason
to explain such a limit with pure SYSV style ptys.

pty.h:#define MAX_PTYNAME_LEN sizeof("/dev/pts/XXXXXXXXXX")

I don't have a big enough machine to test and prove it. But
running :-
cd /dev
/dev/SYSV_PTY
then making device files in /dev/pts any where from 0 to 2^20 in number.
and tune the system for whatever number of logins make sense >0 < 2^20
should provide 10's of thousands of potential logins via telnet.

If this limit listed in the SPD is just a mater of out of date
or incorrect documentation how does one get the SPD changed so that
out channels and every one else does not get told by other vendors that
they can do better than 2048 telnet logins.

Just in case your wondering one of our channel partners is trying
to sell some 8400's to a site that will have around 2000 logins.

It is frustrating to find any vendor can do better than Digital UNIX
(which IMHO is the best UNIX bar none that I have seen) with out impling
that it has restrictions which aren't true or am I missing something.

9975.1I just saw 9916 I had not expected some one had been asked about the same customerSEPPLT::MARKMark GarrettThu May 29 1997 07:1818
My question still stands how/who does one contact to get changes to SPD's
In the case of this I think it's a product management issue not a technical one
so please don't reply telling me it's a support issue, I'm very much aware
that it is since the SPD is the definition of support provided as the legal
contract in the sales process.

I want to hear any discussion that :-

A) provides a technical reason that explain any limiting factor(s) in SYSV pty
   and telnet logins

or

B) who in product management can deal with getting this changed

	Cheers

HI

I suggest you contact Pat Czerny in the PM group...I do think there
are technical reasons but I don't know them...
