9962.0. "RIS clone error "SERVER: Unknown host"" by RHETT::CHOY () Tue May 27 1997 17:30

    a customer has this configuration:
RIS server is dunix v3.0, has been 'utilupdate' on v4.0b
            RIS client is dunix v4.0b

    problem:
this customer is using the RIS Cloning (with CDF file). After boot
the RIS client, the 'vmunix1' gotten loaded OK, then he gets the
    error "SERVER: Unkown host".

i poked around the RIS area, and found this variable $SERVER
appearing lots of times in ../ris0.alpha/product_x/isl/.profile.
but i don't know where this error coming from.

the /etc/hosts on the server contains entries for both client & server.

    question:
if the RIS client & server are on seperate subnets. 'traceroute'
    shows there are 4 gateways.

when using RIS 'add client' option, it will ask you the gateways
IP address, do i have to enter all 4 gateways, or just one?

thanks in advance for any help/info.

Hi,

The correct gateway would be the first-hop from the client's perspective,
in other words the gateway's address on the client's subnet.

For example, for me to install from my RIS server in another subnet,
I run traceroute on the client before bringing it down:

# traceroute unixris
traceroute to unixris.zk3.dec.com (16.140.96.144), 30 hops max, 40 byte
packets
 1 r1-red (16.140.64.1) 85 ms 9 ms 113 ms
 2 unixris (16.140.96.144) 23 ms 5 ms 1 ms

Then I know that 16.140.64.1 is the first-hop gateway. You should be able to
run traceroute from any other machine on that subnet and get the same answer.
If the gateway is wrong in the bootp reply from the server, the client might
not be able to "talk" to it. You might try running traceroute on another
machine on the same segment to see what's really going on.

Sorry, I don't know much about ris cloning.
