no DEFAULT GATEWAY : Are there any hidden complications ------------------ I had a NSR problem that was resolved by doing a #route delete default X.X.X.X Now I have NO Default Gateway. Are there any hidden complications from running like this ? Like I said, the NSR issue of backing up another Subnet that my Decnis box did not know about has been resolved. All the NSR clients are hardcoded in the /etc/hosts file. THis is an Internal DEC NSR server. Thanks - Bob O.

I don't really understand NSR problem/reolution etc.. you mentioned. However, in the routing tabel look-up, the most-specific route is matched and selected to forward packet to. i.e. host-route is the best match, next is specific network route(s). If no host or network route exist then the packet sent to "default gateway" expecting default will know how to get to destination or anothe gateway on the way to destination. In absence of the "default-gatway", the packet is dropped with "unreachable ...". Note that most of the outside world traffic (web browsers) geneally depend on the "default-gateway". --Ajay Kachrani |
