9873.0. "Blank Monitor on a AS-255" by ADISSW::FERRARA () Mon May 19 1997 10:37

    I just installed UNIX 4.0b on my AlphaStation 255.

    I've noticed after pausing the session, say for over-night,
    the next morning the screen is completely black and I can't
    get any thing to appear on the screen unless I cycle power
    on the Monitor.

    Moving the mouse or typing won't "revive" the monitor.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,
     BobF

    What graphics card are you using, and what version of Open3D is
    installed on this system?

9873.2Using the PBXGB-AA adapter...ADISSW::FERRARAMon May 19 1997 12:228

    I am using the PBXGB-AA graphics adapter.

    I'm not sure about the Open3D version...how do I determine
    this? I did install ALL the subsets from the UNIX 4.0b installation
    CD...

9873.3grep the installed list for O3DWRKSYS::RICHARDSONMon May 19 1997 13:4312
    Type this:

    setld -i | grep O3D

    You should find a bunch of stuff with names like O3DDWSCOMMON430.
    O3D...430 are parts of the 4.3 Open3D kit - which you should install if
    you have something older. This problem may still exist, though; there
    were some issues with the firmware on the AS255. You might try running
    a different screen saver, if you are using one of the CDE ones - two of
    them showed this problem much more often than any of the others did.

9873.4Should I install them?ADISSW::FERRARAMon May 19 1997 14:018

    I found no Open3D subsets with the setld...

    Should I install them from the Software Product Library CD's?

    Thanks,
     BobF

9873.5easier to pick it up on lineWRKSYS::RICHARDSONMon May 19 1997 19:086
    Easiest way is to go to the BGSDEV::OPEN3D notes conference. Note 4 in
    there has the pointer to the latest kit for Unix. The boss (Dick
    Coulter, WRKSYS::COULTER) puts the kits into a publicly-accessible
    directory.

9873.6Some results...ADISSW::FERRARATue May 20 1997 14:1818

    Ok, I installed the mandatory Open3D subsets from the April 1997
    Software Product Library:

    % setld -i | grep -i o3
    O3DDWSCOMMON430      installed  Open3D Common V4.3
    O3DDWSCONFIG430      installed  Open3D Config V4.3

    I then rebooted my system.

    I went away for lunch, came back, and again, the monitor was
    black and needed to cycle the power in order to get any
    monitor activity.

    Any ideas?
