9828.0. "`cannot create' after cat filename > /dev/ttyx" by KERNEL::FREKES (Like a thief in the night) Thu May 15 1997 07:03

    Folks

    I have a problem on a customer system, where he is issuing the command:

    #cat filename > /dev/ttyx

    in return he is getting the error message;

    `cannot create'

    I did see note 1996 but it appears that no one has responded to it. O/S
    is Dunix 3.2

    Any input would be greatly appreciatted.

    Regards

9828.1Can't remember exactly.VAXRIO::16.179.32.123::ManoelThu May 15 1997 08:0513
	Hi, Steven

	I received your mail in respect to note 1996.
	In fact I'm not able to remember exactly the solution, but I think
I asked the customer to update the firmware, once I noticed it was needed, and
after that he hasn't phoned any more.
	Is your problem really the same, I mean, you can't cat a a file to
tty00 ? Can some one use it with a terminal to login ?
	What does stty command shows for this port ? (#stty -a </dev/tty00)
	Regards.

Check to see if there's a getty or uugetty process that has that tty
device open. You should also check the permissions for that tty device
and make sure it allows write access.

9828.3server was rebooted. Problem went tooKERNEL::FREKESLike a thief in the nightThu May 15 1997 10:5411
    Folks

    I called the customer to suggest looking at the protections, and he
    said that he has fixed the problem by factory reseting the server, and
    then re-configuring it. It was configured exactly the same way it was
    before, so neither of us have the slightest idea why it is now working.
    We agreed to simply close the call.

    Thanks for your help.

    Steven
