Hi After we had upgrad an A8400 form Digital UNIX V3.2d to V3.2G the backup (with tar) is match slower! Before the upgrad the backup takes about 2 1/4 hours and no it takes about 3 3/4h for the same directories! The backup is made with the "tar" on a TZ88-VA! Any suggestions! Thanks Lucius [Posted by WWW Notes gateway]

There are at least two versions of tar available on your system:
- /usr/bin/tar, /sbin/tar
- /usr/opt/sterling/usr/bin/tar, /usr/opt/sterling/sbin/tar
The tar's under /usr/opt/sterling are the older ones.
We saw a similar problem with cpio. The cpio under /usr/opt/sterling
is significantly faster and doesn't have some problems eg:
- doesn't create sparse files on restore
- reads the complete last block (the new one stops reading after the
end of a trailer; problem when reading from a rsh via pipe)
- outputs its End-of-Media message to stderr ( the new one uses
/dev/tty; problem when started as cronjob)
Maybe in your V3.2D system the "new/normal" tar was exchanged with
the one in /usr/opt/sterling and you have to reapply this exchange ???
