9792.0. "Sun's Auto Client what is it?" by SWAM1::POIANI_MI () Tue May 13 1997 02:14

I was asked if we have anything like AutoClient from Sun. Now I have
heard of jumpstart and knew to compare it to RIS, what is Auto Client,
I guess it has to do with remote file access capabilities?

automount (8) maybe? It's the same thing by the same name on Sun. Used
for automatically NFS-mounting/unmounting remote directories as they
    are used.

It's not automount. I don't have a lot of details but I saw a demo of
it at the '95 UNIX Expo. Here is the excerpt from my trip report:

I went over to the Sun booth and met another completely
incompetent booth person. He was supposed to be demoing
Distributed Software Management and a tool called AutoClient. I got
the brochure for this product and it seems very impressive. Basically,
you have a central server where you fill out a simple dialog box per
client ws to provide info like hostname, ethernet address, ip-addres,
etc. The client then does a "boot net" to automatically boot up. There
is special smarts built in such that all client writes are mirrored on
the server (so you never need to do local backups) and the client can
automatically(?) cache frequently used files to improve perfomance.
It's akin to a DECathena style approach to system management.
When I asked what this has to do with Distributed Software
Management he replied that you could centrally install software on
the server and thus all the clients would have access to it. Geesh.

I'm sure you can find more technical details/specs on Sun's web pages.
