9714.0. "OS upgrade and layered products" by DYOSW5::WILDER (Does virtual reality get swapped?) Mon May 05 1997 11:24

When doing a base OS upgrade (from 4.0a --> 4.0b), there are certain
layered products that MUST be de-installed. This is okay. However,
during the upgrade, it warns you that certain layered products MAY have
to be re-installed, like the AdvFS utilities, DECevent, Performance
    Manager, etc.

Now, my customer has a new Administrator, and they ask "How do we know
if we have to upgrade these products? What do we read that tells us
which of these products have newer versions?"

Well, that is a good question. I don't see anything any any of the
documentation that tells me that with the new release of 4.0b, which
layered products HAVE changed. How does a customer tell this easily?

    Thanks,

    /jim

9714.1Any answer yet??DYOSW5::WILDERDoes virtual reality get swapped?Wed May 07 1997 08:1210
Well, is there an answer?? This is REALLY important to the customer,
especially the AdvFS utilities. I don't see anything in the Release
Notes or the Installation guide. How does a customer EASILY tell if the
products they are warned about durint the upgrade need to be
    re-installed due to newer versions?

    Thanks,

How about reading the release notes of the specified products?

Well, the release notes for the AdvFS Utilities states that they
support versions 4.0 and above. That does not answer the question.

The question is: Have the Utilities changed with the latest release and
if so, how does one tell?

If you install the "latest" utilities, the subset number changes.
However, from a system administrators's view, how do they know if the
version has changed? This applies to the other complementary products,
like DECevent, Performance Manager, etc. I have looked at the release
notes and the installation guide on the CD, and I don't find any
reference to them REQUIRING 4.0x, just that they support say 4.0 and
above. This, as I said above, does not tell anyone if they changed from
    the last release.

Any help, or is it just "guess work"???

    Thanks,

    /jim

Well, I can tell you what versions of the AdvFS Utilities go with what versions
of the base OS. But I can't tell you how to tell. Sorry, I don't have a clue
to that either.

AFAADV*320 works on all flavors of v3.2. It does *not* work on any v4.x baseOS.

AFAADV*400 is intended to work on v4.0. It will also work on v4.0a, v4.0b, and
v4.0c. It *should* work on all releases labeled v4.0x, including PTmin, but
does not work on any v3.2x version.

AFAADV*401 is intended to work on v4.0a. It has a few minor bug fixes from the
400 version, and will work on exactly the same releases as the 400 version.

AFAADV*402 is another bugfix release shipped with v4.0b. Works on the same
releases as above.

AFAADV*4(03? 25?) will ship with PTmin, which is currently called v4.0d (I
think). It includes support for Japanese (Kanji?) internationalization, and a
few other changes.

In Steel (v4.2? v5.0?), the advanced utilities will be bundled in with the base
OS. You will no longer need to worry about which version goes with what for the
AdvFS advanced utilities. This should be a well-publicized change, and we're
working to make sure that even if a customer misses this information, an
upgrade-install will work for them.
9714.5Shouldn't there be a way??DYOSW5::WILDERDoes virtual reality get swapped?Mon May 12 1997 18:155
Shouldn't there be some EASY way for customers to tell if they need to
re-install their products?? Or am I just dreaming??

Yes, there should. I don't know what it is, so I'd recommend raising the issue
with product management.
