9703.0. "/var/run/named.pid ?" by MSAM03::ENGPIANGHING () Fri May 02 1997 13:44

Hello all, I have a customer configured bind primary server and did not manage
to get it work, it is running Digital Unix V3.2G on AlphaServer 300.

The problem was the bind server not able to resolve any name, always got the
error "*** localhost can't find SC5: Non-existent domain".

I am a new hand in setting up DNS/Bind. I help him by removing (choice r on
bindsetup) the earlier setting, then add (choice a) the primary server again.
This time the bind server able to resolve names appear in /etc/hosts only, but
not others.

I noticed when I answered yes to "Would you like bindsetup to start the BIND
daemon automatically [y]?", error "cannot find process matching
/var/run/named.pid" appear. I found that the file /var/run/named.pid is
    there.

How to get ride of this error ? Any help would be very much appreciated.

P/S : Any idea is the dec_bin_setup.txt file still available in dotime:: as
stated in 869.3 ? If not, any pointer to similar documentation ?

Best regards,
-Eng-

Hi,

You really need to provide more information. As a start:

	BIND configuration (server/client/slave)
	/etc/rc.config
	/etc/resolv.conf
	Output from bindsetup
(other things I can't think of)

The error message leads me to believe that you misconfigured the machine.

A good place to start reading about network configuration is the docset,
I believe there's a whole chapter on this. The bindsetup manpage
(or bind_manual_setup for more details) is another place, but the bindsetup
command is pretty straightforward if you read all the paragraphs of text it
has.

For this you'll want to run nissetup.

The customer needs to know the environment the machine is running in so it
can be configured properly. Their local network administrator should have
all the vital information to assist you.
