| I'd suggest filing a QAR/IPMT case. A copy of the backup script/procedure used
and a copy of a bad tape would be way-cool, but if they're security conscious
they probably won't be willing to give us a copy of their entire system.
Without the tape itself I think the next best thing would be to try to restore
everything to /dev/null, and give us a record of the commands and all output.

| Does the unknown/unexpected message appear right away or does it print
out filenames on the tape first? Record type 14 refers to property
lists stored on the tape and the error setting extended attributes also
refers to property lists. If vrestore is printing this out after
filenames, are they files which have property lists? Has the user tried
to restore any of these files? This could be an error only when -t is
used to list what's on the tape.
What do you mean when you say:
>But the /usr file system is always useless the / is
>sometimes useless and the other filesystems are always OK.
Exactly how are the /usr and / backups useless or sometimes useless?

9627.3 | get a tape with backup | NNTPD::"[email protected]" | Lucius Schmid | Wed Apr 30 1997 12:13 | 22 |
| Hi
I will get a tape with the customer's backup from root- & usr-filesys!
>What do you mean when you say:
> >But the /usr file system is always useless the / is
> >sometimes useless and the other filesystems are always OK.
The customer said:
-The error-messages appears always if he restore the usr-filesys and the
restore failed
-Somtimes, the error-messages appears if he restore the root-filesys
-The other filesys never reports error-messages
But I will test it out and will give you more infos!
Thanks

9627.4 | acl!! | NNTPD::"[email protected]" | Lucius Schmid | Tue May 06 1997 11:08 | 26 |
| Hi
Here some news!
After I said the customer (the second time) he should turn off "acl", no more
errors or headers appears ! Now the customer trust his backup again!
In the meantime I get the tape and there was something other than the customer
told me!
-The vrestore errors (error setting extended ...), appears not all together at
the
begining of a vrestore! An error message appears after a filename and the next
error after an other filename and so on!
-Further these errors appears but you can restore the files without some
problems!
But this behavioir isn't a nice thing!
The customer lose the trust in the backup (-> in Digital)!
Is this a known problem and will this fixed in a patch or in the next release?
Thanks
Lucius
