9609.0. "``%%% HELP %%% OSF 4.0A - ADVFS INTERNAL ERROR: dealloc_bits_page: can't clear a bit twice!'" by NNTPD::"[email protected]" (Thierry FAIDHERBE) Thu Apr 24 1997 08:56

Hi,

One of my customer called yerterday for a system crash.

When analysing, I saw that was one OSF 4.0A - ADVFS INTERNAL ERROR:
dealloc_bits_page:
can't clear a bit twice! crash.

I found two IPMT cases for that problem but both are closed without solution.

NO patches, solution or workaround for that problem have been provided

I put my crash-data file.

Can someone take a look or inform me if USengineering is working on it or if
I must open a new IPMT case.

Thanks for quickly help ....

Kind Regards,

9609.1more infos... NNTPD::"[email protected]"Thierry FAIDHERBEThu Apr 24 1997 09:1921
I created one reply because I posted the same note in the advfs conference.

Customer system crashed while making dumps from one disk to another
on a shared scsi bus.

When customer tryed to reboot and remount advfs domains,
he got the following error :
domain not activated ... inconsistency detected.

I proposed to customer to make new domain and restore it after

I asked if USEG is working on it because in one IPMT, I saw that
".. closing this IPMT but USEG is always working ..... "

Hope Replies ....

Thanks once more

Thierry

9609.2Please use CANASTA ... then IPMT if no solutionHAN::HALLEVolker Halle MCS @HAO DTN 863-5216Thu Apr 24 1997 12:1722
    Thierry,

    in the future, please send your crash-data file to the CANASTA Mail
    Server first (and indicate in the note if you have done so). Please
    read note 8919 on how to use CANASTA...

    If CANASTA doesn't have a solution four you, it will - in most cases -
    have a list of crashes with similar/identical footprints, some of those
    might be IPMTs (so you don't have to 'search' for them - CANASTA will
    tell you).

    This "can't clear bit twice" is a very 'popular' problem. USEG has
    started writing a troubleshooting rule for this, but the rule has not
    been finished and activated yet. Many notes in ADVFS_SUPPORT discuss
    this problem (see note ADVFS_SUPPORT 1051 as a starting point).

    Then again, if CANASTA does not find a solution for your customer's
    problem, escalate via IPMT. USEG owns both the IPMTs and the CANASTA
    rules for Digital UNIX, so they are interested in providing as much
    information as possible to prevent duplicate IPMTs...

    Volker.
