9573.0. "sendmail / Uppercase in aliases / nis ... little or big prob ???" by NNTPD::"[email protected]" (thierry FAIDHERBE) Tue Apr 22 1997 09:17

Hi to all,

I am working since a few days on a call with sendmail ( OS : DU4.0A)

Customer have defined the following in the local aliases file
on their nis server :
digital:[email protected]
DiGiTal2.3:[email protected]
DiGiTaL2-3:[email protected]
Digital:[email protected]

I runned newaliases in /var/adm/sendmail directory and ok.
From their nis master server, aliases mailing is ok.

now, I created the 3 links for aliases :
cd /etc/yp/src

ls -al |grep aliases
 lrwxrwxrwx   1 root     system        25 Apr 22 13:19 aliases ->
/var/adm/sendmail/aliasess
 lrwxrwxrwx   1 root     system        29 Apr 22 13:19 aliases.dir ->
/var/adm/sendmail/aliases.dir
 lrwxrwxrwx   1 root     system        29 Apr 22 13:19 aliases.pag ->
/var/adm/sendmail/aliases.pag

cd ..

make aliases
 ( phush aliases ...)

Now ... test :
==============
---|> from nis master server : mailx -v DiGiTaL2-3 is ok

---|> from a Nis client,
 and if I run the same command (mailx -v DiGiTaL2-3)
 I always receive ... USER Unknow
If I check with ypmatch DiGiTaL2-2 aliases, I found the aliase for
[email protected]

On sendmail.cf file, I removed the U flag for Mlocal.
and restartted sendmail daemon.

Can someone explain these starnge things or Bug ????
Any comment would be very appreciate.

Thanks in advance,
Kind Regards,

9573.1those databases are different!NNTPD::"[email protected]"Farrell WoodsTue Apr 22 1997 11:0123
Please do NOT create links for the .dir and .pag files between sendmail
and NIS. NIS databases (maps) always have a couple of extra entries
that you don't normally see. These are used by the NIS utilities. If you
attempt to point NIS at databases created by the sendmail tools then
you're apt to cause NIS to break.

I don't know about sendmail and its aliases file specifically but I wouldn't
be surprised if the same holds true there as well.

What you could do is to create a symlink in /var/yp/src that points to
/var/adm/sendmail/aliases. Then use NIS's makedbm utility to create the
NIS map for the aliases file, and use the newaliases command to build
sendmail's alias databse.

Bottom line: the .pag and .dir files that NIS creates WILL be different
than those that "newaliases" creates. Don't substitute one for the other.

hi,

that seems to work a little better but mailx always refuse to send mail to
one aliases if aliase includes . -

Aliase to digital .. -|> Ok
          Digital        Ok
          DIGITAL        Ok
          DIGITAL.digital  ... user unknow
          DIGITAL-digital  ... user unknow ...

Other ideas why mailx doesn't accept these chars ???? I think that
the explanaition should become from mailx because one
ypmatch DIGITAL.digital aliases give correct Email address ...

Other ideas ????

Hi,

Now I can reproduce the customer problem.
When using Nis master server (OSF3.2E) and Nis client (OSF 3.2G, 4.0,
4.0b, 4.0a), problem seems to be the same.

For This test, TFD_DIG is a nis aliases for faidherb.
The faidherb account is "provided" by the Nis Passwd.

I copied my tfd_dig, TFD-DIG ,...... to the local aliases database and
I ran the newaliases command, these tfd_dig, TFD-DIG ,......

and THAT WORKS VERY FINE ... ... ...

Can somebody explain Why .... IS IT A BUG in mailx when accessing to
Nis Aliases database ???? I think because if I run one "ypmatch TFD-DIG
aliases"
I receive "faidherb". In this way, I think that Nis have successfully exported
the aliases .....

Any comments, explanations, .....

Thanks
