Is it true that, under Digital Unix 3.2x and 4.0x, the route entries created by a redirect will not timeout? Then, does it mean that when a reverse failure occurs, or when a better path come up which is not that previously learned redirect route, then this old redirect route will not be replaced by a new redirect? Does it result what is shown up as increasing counter value of 'bad routing redirects' in 'netstat -rs' ? If it is true, a bug or design issue? Any suggestion or hints? -feynman [Posted by WWW Notes gateway]

Yes, it is true, redirects do not time out, they stay in the routing table forever. I haven't tried redirecting a redirected route, so I'm not sure if they pile up, or if they get replaced when they are "updated". I would hope they are updated. Do you have evidence of multiple redirects piling up and becoming replicated? John

Thanks for the reply. I think the situation may even worse such that Digital Unix simply ignores the new redirects and stick to the old ones. - feynman [Posted by WWW Notes gateway]

Digital UNIX will obey the new redirects (That's how the M bit gets set in the netstat -r display) but only if they come from the gateway that you were redirected to. |
