9548.0. "Sound support for Miata" by SWAM1::POIANI_MI () Fri Apr 18 1997 10:21

    The PWSau comes with a soundblaster 16 audio card. Is this part of the
    4.0c support in Digital UNIX? This is very important for a large deal I
    am working against SUN and SGI, and believe me these folks al play CD's
    in their desktop (UNIX) CD players.

Hi,

Most people I know running DU use xmcd to listen to music cd's on
their workstations (most of us here in Engineering don't have
Soundblaster cards). Someone gave me a tarball years ago, so I
don't know where it came from, you could probably find it within
5 minutes using Altavista if the snippet below doesn't work. I
don't believe there's any cd player that comes with the baseos,
although there might be something that actually uses the Soundblaster.

You might want to check the AP or freeware cd's we ship as part of
the OS, things like this sometimes make it there.

WHERE TO GET XMCD
-----------------
The source code release of xmcd version 1.1 is available via Internet
anonymous FTP.  Location:

        ftp.x.org:/contrib/xmcd-1.1.README      (Instructions)

        ftp.x.org:/contrib/xmcd-1.1.tar.Z       (compress'd tar archive)
                or
        ftp.x.org:/contrib/xmcd-1.1.tar.gz      (gzip'd tar archive)

An xmcd CD database is also available via FTP:

        ftp.x.org:/contrib/xmcd-cddb.README     (Instructions)

        ftp.x.org:/contrib/xmcd-cddb.tar.Z      (compress'd tar archive)
                or
        ftp.x.org:/contrib/xmcd-cddb.tar.gz     (gzip'd tar archive)

The multimedia software available on Digital UNIX supports the soundblaster
but it doesn't support the mixer on the card, so even if your cd is wired
to your soundblaster internally, you can't play cd's through the soundblaster.

xmcd is a nice program to control the cd player, though.
9548.3Sound support for Miata not in V4.0C.BGSDEV::CDANCYChip DancyFri Apr 18 1997 13:5920
A few clarifications:

The miata contains an ESS Technology 1888/7 chip, which provides a Soundblaster
Pro compatibility mode (NOT Soundblaster 16). For example, Soundblaster
Pro only supports 16-bit stereo at 11khz. We will be providing
support for the ESS 1888 extended mode of operation, through the Multimedia
Services layered product. (Extended mode will provide 16-bit stereo at 44kz.)

There will be no support for a Soundblaster card in an isa slot.

If you wanted to, you could put a Microsoft Sound Card (or compatible)
in an isa slot, and use the Multimedia Services MSB driver.

This software support will be available on the July Layered Product CD.
A field test version will be available earlier; contact David Falco,
the product manager for Multimedia Services.

V4.0C does contain xcd (in OSFXEXAMPLES410), which will play cd's out the
speaker or speaker jack.

I much prefer 'xmcd' to 'xcd'. The place I get it from is:

	http://sunsite.unc.edu/~cddb/xmcd/

I'm using this on a Flamingo, so the sound has to come out of the speaker jack
on the CD player itself.

9548.5Use the sound card.SWAM1::POIANI_MISat Apr 19 1997 00:379
    Yes the sound must come from the front of the CD? Why not from the
    embedded stereo sound card? Is there another program that will do this.

    Also thanks for the update on MMS support for the Miata sound chip.
    They do want more than playing CD's they want fully supported sound as
    our competitors offer, for playing wave files, or recording sounds
    through a microphone.
