9528.0. "NFS Portmap: RPC: Program not registered ??" by ADISSW::FERRARA () Wed Apr 16 1997 18:41

I am getting this message when I attempt to NFS mount
    from my server:

     NFS IO service started
NFS Locking: rpc.statd and rpc.lockd started
     Mounting NFS filesystems
NFS Portmap: RPC: Program not registered

I went thru the Network Admin troubeshooting pages...I still
get this message about the RPC program not being registered...

    -Thanks.

I am getting this message when I attempt to NFS mount
    from my server:
NFS Portmap: RPC: Program not registered

I was going to say that most of the confusing mount error messages will be
fixed in Steel, but it looks like I didn't help this case. Steel will say:

Cannot contact portmapper at %s: RPC: Program not registered

(%s will be replaced with the server's name)
but what really is the problem is that portmap is running on the server
but nfsd isn't.

If portmap is not running, after a very long delay, this will print:

Cannot contact portmapper at %s: RPC: Port mapper failure - RPC: Timed out

I'll see if I can clean that up a little better. At least it will print
the server's name, a big step forward.

See http://www.zk3.dec.com/~werme/support.html for some roughed-out
notes on analyzing NFS problems.
