9521.0. "Specific national characters in filenames" by MUNICH::CUZUM () Wed Apr 16 1997 11:19

Hi, unix-engineers,

I have a customer, who has files with specific national characters in
their names and now he complains, he has problems when (v)dumping and
restoring this files. I told him, I think this characters are not
supported, but he told me, in the "User's Guide", he only read that a
filename can't contain "\" and is not recommended to contain
shell-specific characters. I verified and he's right. Now, he wants me
to provide him an official statemaent about not using specific national
characters in filenames or Digital should make it work. Can anyone tell,
where I can find more detailed information on supported filenames?

Regards,

Corina

9521.1can you describe the problems ? SMURF::WENDYWed Apr 16 1997 11:269
    Can you provide a bit more information about this ? For example, are
    the filenames all in a specific codeset or mixed codesets ? And exactly
    what sort of problem is he encountering when dumping and restoring the
    files ?

9521.2no mixed codesetsMUNICH::CUZUMWed Apr 16 1997 12:3415
    Hi, Wendy,

    the customer has all lowercase filenames, some of them containing the
    german specific characters (u, a, o with 2 dots upon). When he makes a
    vdump of a fileset conaining such files, they get dumped but appear on
    the tape with the special character cut out of the name. (Sorry, I
    can't use this characters here, but for example a file called:tuv
    (instead of u, think u with 2 dots upon) appears on the tape as tv and
    can't be restored. There aren't mixed codesets.

    Thanks,

    Corina

Sounds like a bug in vdump/vrestore to me. I'd recommend filing a QAR/CLD/IMPT
case, whichever is appropriate to elevate it for engineering to work on it.

As always, "The customer is always right." :)
