9490.0. "redirect Digital Unix Console " by MAIL1::GHAHRAMANI () Mon Apr 14 1997 14:18

My customer, AT&T, wants to monitor his workstation(Alphastation
    500/400 MHZ) from a remote
site. The workstation is located at a central site with some other
equipment. He wants workstation console input/output to be redirected
to an RS232 line to be accessed remotely, and want to be able to boot
    and shutdown the system remotely.

I need to tell the customer what he needs to configure to get this
working. Is this an option with Digital Unix? I have not seen much on
this in the alphastation or Digital Unix notes conference.

Additional information from the customer is that all of the equipment
at the central site is accessed via dialing into a CISCO Access
    Router.

    In summary:

    1. How does console i/o get redirected in Digital Unix?
    2. Can this be done if the ceonnection to the workstation needs to go
    through a CISCO ACCESS ROUTER?

    Thanks,

    Forough

9490.1set CONSOLE SERIALQUARRY::petertrigidly defined areas of doubt and uncertaintyMon Apr 14 1997 16:5019
At the >>> prompt, if you type in 'show' it lists a series of preset variables.
One of these, I believe, is "console". Assuming you have a graphics head
on it at present, it will likely read:

CONSOLE GRAPHICS

You need to attach a serial line to the serial port, which is not an
RS232 port on the Alphastations, but you can often find converters.
Once the serial line is set up, and hooked into a terminal, you can set (
at this point from either the graphics head, or the serial line, if it is
hooked up correctly

set CONSOLE SERIAL

and then reboot the machine. You might have to power cycle just to be
sure, as I had some wierd interactions at first, but otherwise it is
as simple as that.

POLYCENTER Console Manager is a management application
that specifically makes use of console traffic routed
over the network to manage up to 200 remote systems.
It uses scan profiles to detect problems on the remote
systems and allows for remote shutdown and reboot.
