9489.0. "System accounting - overhead?" by CSC32::G_KAKLIKIAN () Mon Apr 14 1997 13:56

I have a customer requesting an estimate of resource overhead (cpu usage,
virtual memory, etc) for UNIX system accounting. I suggested he enable
accounting and monitor his system, which he was reluctant to do. Anybody have
any experience using system accounting on UNIX that can provide me with some
estimates? Basic accounting functionality - enabling data collection and running
basic cron jobs (runacct,ckpacct,ac,pac,etc) - would be sufficient.
Thanks,
Gary

Hi

 My experience is it is pretty low, assuming you have disk space
on /var file system, and that there are no pre-existing I/O performance
problems on /var.
