9436.0. "DEC UNIX 4.0 frequent crashes ..." by QUABBI::"[email protected]" (ajay) Tue Apr 08 1997 19:33

My unix 4.0 on alpha station 500 has been crashing so frequently that I
 am starting to wonder how does it provide enterprise wide commercial
 solution. Yes, it happens most of the time while using netscape. The disk
makes a screeching sound, appears as if doing reads or write and volla there
 it goes down with the following message on the screen

 pvp0: SIGKILL RM pid 521

 and then I get the login prompt.

 Any dec unix gurus ...

 FYI:  I have
   vmunix: Digital UNIX V4.0B  (Rev. 564); Fri Feb 21 16:08:01 PST 1997
   vmunix: physical memory = 128.00 megabytes
   vmunix: available memory = 113.90 megabytes
   vmunix: using 483 buffers containing 3.77 megabytes of memory
   vmunix: Firmware revision: 6.3
   vmunix: PALcode: OSF version 1.21
   vmunix: Digital AlphaStation 500/333
   vmunix: Mem_size = 131981312, consmem = 273

   vmunix: Sysconfigtab PCI_Option entry 28 invalid.

    Oh, I'd say a little more info is needed.

    First -- what do you mean by "crash." System crashes don't get
    you to the login prompt. Maybe the console prompt.

    So please clarify -- system crash, or a program "crashing"?
    If a system crash, then there's really nothing here
    to go on at all.

    The "pvp0" in .0 indicates you have a ZLXp-L* graphics card.
    There have been known problems with crashes and such, especially
    with Netcape. There are supposed to be fixes in the latest Open3D
    kit (4.3). Try installing that and see if it makes things better.
    I know of two L2 crashes fixed in the kit and one of them was related
    to Netscape (the other brought to the surface by the dxladebug call
    stack pulldown).

    You can copy (via DECNet)
    gqa22::/usr/users/open3d_kits/v430_ssb/O3D430/O3D430.tar

    to your workstation, untar it and use "setld -l" to install it (as
    root). If you have an older version of Open3D installed now, delete
    that one first.

    If you still have problems, seek help in BGSDEV::OPEN3D

    Hope this helps!
