9429.0. "Netscape Communicator V4.0 under Digital UNIX" by DECC::SULLIVAN (Jeff Sullivan) Tue Apr 08 1997 12:16

I downloaded Netscape V4.0b3-97094 from the IBG website at
http://ibgzko.zko.dec.com/sdk/ . I was able to download, install it and bring it
up without a problem.

The only problem that I have is that I cannot select any of the hotlinks on a
web page (the Home and Search buttons on the top work fine). It seems pretty
unusable without being able to follow web page links, so I gave up. I am running
on Digital UNIX V4.0.

Is this a known problem?

-Jeff

PS - I also noticed that this version ofnetscape is almost 14Mb. I was under the
impression that they were breaking it up into separate apps.

9429.1Same fix as Java support (libXt.so) ...DECC::SULLIVANJeff SullivanTue Apr 08 1997 12:4612
Netscape V4.0b3 seems to work as expected if you use the same tricks that were
needed to run Java applets on the previous version of netscape on Digital UNIX
V4.0. That is, use the special libXt.so and set your LD_LIBRARY_PATH to point at
that one.

This fix was only necessary in the previous version if you wanted to run Java
applets, but appears to be necessary in this version for more fundamental use.

I'm suprised that this was not included in the kit or mentioned in the README.
If all else fails, I'll usually read the manual....

9429.2not fixed YET?HYDRA::DONSBACHJeff Donsbach, Software Partner Engineering, DTN 297-6862Wed Apr 09 1997 12:156
    I thought this "libXt" issue was supposed to be FIXED in
    Netscape 4.0 making the "patch" unnecessary?! Maybe they just haven't
    gotten to it yet....

The fix is to build Navigator ("Communicator") under a later version of
Digital UNIX. At least the Communicator preview 3 is, I believe, built on a
3.2 system rather than on 2.0 as previous versions were -- but they need to
build on 4.0 (or maybe 3.2C or later?) to avoid the libXt workaround.

There was a threshold where X11 changed from select() to poll(). We've
crossed that line, and they haven't.

In any case, I'm not impressed with the interface or stability of
Communicator. So now I've got the choice of annoying extra windows and new
Communicator crashes... or the 3.01 paned windows and its familiar crashes. I
sure hope there's a substantially improved preview 4 before they release the
real 4.0.

9429.4Crash and burn...DECC::SULLIVANJeff SullivanThu Apr 10 1997 12:5112
Yes, Communicator preview 3 on Digital UNIX will crash all over the place.
For example, when saving preferences, when loading some pages, when sending
mail, sometimes when sitting idle... The problems I encountered were so
pervasive that I have not (yet) reported any problems. Surely, someone must have
reported these fundamental flaws already...

I like some of the new features (mail, composer, and new default bg/link/vlink
colors), but it's definitely not ready for Prime Time yet.

Grin. Yup... you didn't report them because someone else must have. I didn't
report them because someone else must have. Gee... see a pattern here? I
wonder if it's possible that NOBODY has reported them. I always end up
following the same philosophy you expressed when testing something new and
unreliable -- and I always feel guilty about it. Maybe I should run over to
Netscape's problem reporting page and complain. Of course, last time I did
that, the browser crashed... ;-)
