9321.0. "modem works with tip but not with cu" by GRIFUN::BENVI () Thu Mar 27 1997 11:30

Hi all,
my question is similar to 8575, that is still without an answer.....
I've c suctomer who tried to configure a modem on /dev/tty00 of a Alphaserver 4100 5/400
runing DUnix 4.0.

He followed the intrsuctions contained in modem manpage and hete is what he did.

on /etc/remote:
br9600:dv=/dev/tty00:br#9600:pa=none

After this if he issues:
tip -9600 br9600
he successfully connects to modem that answer to AT command and manage to
estabish a remote dialin sessio with another system.

He then tried to use cu with the follwing steps:

- he modified /etc/inittab by ading the following line:

modem:23:respawn:/usr/lib/uucp/uugetty -r -t 60 tty00 9600

and issued init q

If he tries
	cu -l /dev/tty00
he gets a
NO DEVICES CONNECTED error (or something similar)

If (with tty90 "managed" by uugetty) he tries tip he gets the follwing behaviour:
tip br9600
	connected
<on first character typed>
	lost carrier error

Can anybody explain why?
Where are the mistakes?

Thanks in advance
Angelo

The customer hasn't setup things up correctly. The Network Administration
manual which covers UUCP setup should help.
