9290.0. "Printing to a VMS que" by ICS::CHRISBELL () Tue Mar 25 1997 20:27

    I'm trying to set up a remote printer on my Unix system.

    OSF1 pknsr1.pko.dec.com V3.2 148 alpha

    THe print que is on a VMS machine with ucx and the LPD enabled.

    Here is my printcap file:

    #
    lp|lp0|0|ln17:\
            :lf=/usr/adm/lperr:\
            :lp=:\
            :rm=ICS.PKO.DEC.COM:\
            :rp=PK11OPS:\
            :sd=/usr/spool/lpd:

    But when I look at the printer it keeps coming up with this:

    # lpq
    pknsr1.pko.dec.com: Tue Mar 25 20:20:49 1997: waiting for
    ICS.PKO.DEC.COM to come up

    bytes

    I can ping the VMS system from my unix system ok. Is there something
    else I'm missing?

    Yes! You need to do some magic at the VMS/UCX end.

    This message ...
    	"waiting for ICS.PKO.DEC.COM to come up"
    ... is probably telling you that the UCX print subsystem won't accept
    jobs from you UNIX system. I don't know the specific UCX commands you
    need to enable this - your friendly local UCX-person may be able to
    help.

    A good start would be for a privileged VMS user to enter

    	$ reply/enable

    and watch the messages that appear when you try to print.

    Hope this helps
