9280.0. "Unix v4.0b tape driver confused ?" by PANTER::MARTIN (Be vigilant...) Tue Mar 25 1997 11:36
A customer reported a problem on a AS4100 system running DEC Unix
v4.0b (rev 564) with the "mt -f /dev/rmt0l" command.
The system acts as a tape server, it has 4 tape drives connected to
it (STK Redwood drives).
3 devices out of 4 (rmt0, rmt2 &rmt3) reported the error message:
>> "Device busy" when we tried the "mt -f /dev/nrmtxl status"
It seemed however that no processes were actually using these
devices (checked with both lsof and ps).
We wonder if the tape driver was confused by something...
or if really a process we couldn't locate was actually using
these devices.
We forced a crash dump.
Can somebody have a look at the crash dump available on
ftp://marchi.geo.dec.com/pub/crash-shd51.tar
It contains crash-data.0 as well as vmcore.0.Z and vmunix.0.Z !
Thanks in advance for your investigation,
