9235.0. "DU 4.0B RIS install failes" by KAMPUS::BRANDNER (That's noot eentiiirly aaacuuraate ...) Thu Mar 20 1997 08:22

	Hi all,

had set up a RIS under DU 4.0B without any patches.
Tried to RIS install another Alpha system.
All runs smooth up to the point when the remote system tries to
install the first subset. It displays lots of lines like
		pax: sbin/killall: permission denied

The ris area is mounted at /
The local (future) root filesystem is mounted at /mnt
The local (future) usr filesystem is mounted at /mnt/usr

	All filesystems are ADVFS.

	Question:
Does a RIS install run as root?
	What's wrong?

	Some more Info:
	KAPUTT is the server,
GLASS is the client to RIS install

	/etc/exports:
/ris/ris0.a/product_1 -root=0 -ro
/usr/var/adm/ris/ris0.alpha/kit -root=0 -ro

	/etc/hosts.equiv contains
glass

	/.rhosts contains
glass root

After the GLASS complained about the permission denied the verify
fails. Then GLASS tells me to start a second attempt with setld and
asks me again about the subsets to install.

But to no avail: again permission denied and verify fails.
Finally I get the prompt of the shell.

The command whami and id tells me that the shell runs with the uid
of root (0). I try to read the files, pax got the permission denied,
	and I can!

	So what's going on ???????

9235.2Finally it works, but ......KAMPUS::BRANDNERThat's noot eentiiirly aaacuuraate ...Mon Mar 24 1997 06:5337
Finally I got it working, but there remain questions to be answered.

As I like to work with tcsh I changed the shell entry in /etc/passwd
to /bin/tcsh. RIS install fails as described in .0

Changed the shell entry back to /bin/sh. RIS install fails.

	So changed again to /bin/tcsh.

Found Note 4287 in this conference. There the script utilupdate is
mentioned. I've looked into the script and checked the files
	/usr/sbin/ris, /usr/sbin/dmu, /usr/sbin/setld and
/var/adm/ris/bin/ris_pax against the corresponding files in the
RIS area. Sizes same, rights same, dates same.

Just to give it a try I ran utilupdate.
Now the RIS install works !?!?!?!?!

The server was installed off the distribution CD. The RIS area was
build off the distribution CD. The above files are identical. Running
utilupdate just copies files out of the RIS area to the appropriate
destination where the (*identical*) files already are.

The manual states that you only have to run utilupdate having a
server running pre DU 4.0 serving DU 4.0 or later.
	(Chapter 3.1: AA-PS3LE-TE_html/sharing4.html#prep_compat_sec)

My server is running DU4.0B serving DU4.0B. All out of the same CD.

Why do I have to run utilupdate????

I'm confused. Maybe someone from UNIX enigneering could explain this
	behavor?

	Thanks,
	Rudi
9235.3RIS install problems w/ 4.0BNETRIX::"[email protected]"Tom Reu - Digital UNIX InstallationWed Mar 26 1997 16:5112
Hi.

I tried to reproduce your configuration (I think) but I am
unable to reproduce the problem. In regards to the server,
did you do a full installation to get it to 4.0B or did
you update install? If you did an update install, what
did you update from?

Regards,
Tom Reu
