9231.0. "ADVFS file check and removal of LSM volume" by WARFUT::MELLING () Wed Mar 19 1997 19:18

    	Hello,

Is there an equivalent file system check for an ADVFS domain
    	to fsck for UFS filesystems.

Is it permitted to remove an LSM volume from an ADVFS domain,
a customer has tried to do this by adding extra physical volumes
into the ADVFS domain then using the GUI trying to remove the
original LSM member. This apparently caused ADVFS to die, trashing
this domain and leaving other domains in a strange state which
the subsequent reboot seemed to cure. The original domain had to
    	be restored from backup.

I would be grateful for help on the above.

No. That's *the* key feature of AdvFS: No more fsck!

There are a couple of utilities that you may look into, though: 'verify'
(v4.0x) and 'msfsck' (v3.2x). 'verify' replaced 'msfsck', and in Steel there
will be a much, much improved salvage utility.

Yes, but probably not in the way the customer tried to do it.

You can use 'addvol' and 'rmvol' to do this. You can also use the AdvFS GUI to
do this, which actually uses addvol and rmvol under the covers. You can NOT use
the LSM GUI to do this. You also cannot simply edit the soft links that exist
in /etc/fdmns. Note that you need the AdvFS Advanced Utilities license to do
all of this. It ain't free with the base OS.

I would be grateful for help on the above.

You can also try the DECWET::ADVFS_SUPPORT notes conference for further
questions.

Actually, the functionality of the 4.x 'verify' command is covered by
a combination of 'msfsck' and 'vchkdir' in 3.x.
