9228.0. "XDMCP, Exceed, Excursion" by NETRIX::"[email protected]" (Alan Barker) Wed Mar 19 1997 12:07

Hi,

We are trying to connect to a Digital Unix V4.0a system using XDMCP-broadcast
from Exceed V5.1.3 (Intel and Alpha versions), and we have tried it from
Excursion (version ??? Intel).

We are running Enhanced security on the Unix machine.

I have searched our COMET databases for references to the above problem, and
have implemented the necessary entries to the ttys (ttys.db) file.

Yet we only seem to be able to connect to the Unix box and get the CDE, if we
us an IP address instead of a Machine name, in the line:-

local\:0|local\:0.0 ...etc...

that we copy and edit to be:-

16.42.1.151\:0|16.42.1.151\:0.0 ..... etc. ....

Using Host name instead, we get the message:-

"Cannot obtain database information on this terminal"

That is from Exceed on Intel, and Excursion on Intel.
From Exceed on Alpha, it we get the message what ever we put in the ttys file.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Alan Barker. DTN: 851-1519

FYI: anyone who is interested and future reference.

After some long hours, a couple of my colleagues solved the problem described
in my initial note.

The problem seemed to be with the names of the trusted machines contained
in the ttys file, and the corresponding entries in the /etc/hosts file.

The machine names in the ttys file need to be in UPPER-CASE. (Well, this
makes it work anyway). In the /etc/hosts file, although we had the full names
in initially, we changed those to UPPER-CASE and added other names for the
machine/ip address, also in UPPER-CASE.

The Windows NT Server in our domain, is a primary DNS server. The Unix box
is a secondary DNS server. This setup seems to be causing a few problems
itself. DNS doesn't always find out the names/ip addresses of machines on
our domain. In fact it looses them completely at times.

Anyway it works now, in a reasonably consistant manner.

Alan.
