9208.0. "writeable CDrom support" by GIDDAY::SCHWARZ () Tue Mar 18 1997 01:25

    G'day all,

    I know this one has been asked a couple of times in here but it was
    never really answered. Do we support a writeable cdrom on any version
    of digital unix? I know that you can get s/w from http://www.ymi.com/
    that will make it work but is the actual device supported. My customer
    has a Yamaha cde 100 and is wanting to know if it is supported. So far
    my searches have come up blank.

    Regards

9208.1May work - Not "supported" by DigitalRHETT::PARKERTue Mar 18 1997 10:1820

    Hi, Kym.

    There is no WORM driver for SCSI/CAM on Digital UNIX. The CAM
    layered components do not provide one either. So, I don't think
    there is a supported writeable cdrom solution currently - someone
    will correct me if I wrong. Of course, if it's not in the SPD, then
    it's not supported. But, there are several potention SPD's - Digital
    UNIX, Cam Layered Components, etc...

    This is not to say it won't work. It very well may. But, being
    supported is another matter as I'm sure you are aware. I have talked
    to people who are using these type of devices on Digital UNIX. Maybe
    the drivers from Young Minds will work? You could possibly send them
    mail and see...

    Hope this helps!

	One would also think that if a 3rd party provides software
	that supports a particular device when the base operating
	system doesn't, then the 3rd party software supports the
	device itself.

Digital UNIX and CAM can work with just about any SCSI device. The only thing
missing is the software that talks to the device through the CAM user agent
ioctl interface or a chunk of kernel code to send the correct codes to the
WORM drive along with the data. I started some of this code to work with
SONY CDW-900E drives but haven't gotten back to finishing up the code.
