9108.0. "One token network works, while the other doesn't" by TAMIR::LANDSBERG (Internets success will also be its downfall) Tue Mar 11 1997 11:37
Hi,
I have been working with a DECserver 4100 with UNIX 4.0A, connected to
a Token ring network.
The site has two token ring networks, a large one and a small one. When
the Alphaserver is connected to the large network everything works OK.
When the Alpha is booted while the small network is connected the Alpha
cannot speak to network.
If I boot the Alpha, while the large network
is connected, and then disconnect the Token Ring line from the large
network, and then connect the line to the small network, everything
works. i.e. it is possible to ping, telnet etc.
Q: What takes place when a Token Ring network comes up. How is it, when
the large network is connected, and then the line is transferred to the
small network everything works. Yet when the Alpha is booted, while the
small network is connected, the Token ring adapter does not seem to
work ?
What do I need to do ?
Thanks,
Alex

I assume you're running IP over the Token Ring adapter...
Lot's of things happen when you bring the system up on a Token Ring.
There are about 50 reasons why switching the cable to the other MAU
would work (most notably a built in source route to the IP router).
Let's concentrate on why it doesn't work from the small ring.
Is the small ring connected to the rest of their LAN (i.e., is there a
Source Routing Bridge or a regular TCP/IP router)?
What exactly is failing on the small ring? Is the IP address
incorrect for the small ring?

9108.2 | an impudent impedance problem | TAMIR::LANDSBERG | Internets success will also be its downfall | Mon Mar 17 1997 17:10 | 9 |
| Hi Kirt,
The customer's network people paid a visit. They said their is an
impedance problem. We by passed the patch panel and everything worked
straight from the start.
Thanks anyway,
Alex
