9062.0. "open-max-system parameter" by SMAUG::GANTYALA () Thu Mar 06 1997 18:50

I have a application which opens more that 4096 files. I attempted to change
OPEN_MAX_SYSTEM in order to increase the hard and soft limits in subsystem
proc. After this change I did kernel rebuild by giving command 'doconfig -c XX'.
But, while booting it stills sees the default open-max-system 4096,
and prompts warning for the increased values of open-max-soft and open-max-hard.

Is it possible to increase the OPEN_MAX_SYSTEM value say 200046?. How to build
the kernel with this change?

Thanks and Regards
-Ramesh

You need kernel sources and need to rebuild these in order for the
change to take effect. In ptmin (V4.0D) the OPEN_MAX_SYSTEM can be upped.

Also i was led to believe that the SNA group (which i see you are a
member of from your node id) have already successfully worked around
    this problem.

Your are right, I am from the SNA group. I belive this was done in
Feb,1996 at customer place by applying a special patch for
Digital Unix3.2x to increase the soft/hard limits.

Now, I would like have open-max-soft and open-max-hard assigned to 32768 on
Digital Unix 4.0x. Do I need to have a custom build kernel in order
to increase the open-max-soft/hard values to 32768?.

This means, that I need to have a special kernel patch to increase the
    OPEN_MAX_SYSTEM. Is this correct?

Hi. What is the time frame that you need this patch? I will inquire for
you concerning specifics, but there is no patch for this as yet.

The functionality is already in ptmin (V4.0D), don't know if you can wait for
that.

Thanks,
Janice Chang
