Hi, folks.
There is a customer with OSF/1 V3.2C, and they are using LSM and
advfs.
They complain that when the power goes out, due to local
electrical problems, they boot the machine and all LSM volumes are
available, so they have to use graphical interface to put again all LSM
volumes under ADVFS domains.
It has happened more than twice, and the only thing I noticed is
that they have too many volumes under lots of domains.
Can someone point me any glue.
Thanks in advance for any help.
I'll post below the output of volprint -ht.

From an AdvFS perspective, I don't understand most of your post. What tells you that "all LSM volumes are available"? What graphical interface are they using? How do they "put again all LSM volumes under ADVFS domains"? What do you mean by "too many volumes under lots of domains"? The output of "ls -lR /etc/fdmns", "cd /etc/fdmns ; showfsets *", and "df" would be helpful.

Hi, Martin
Thanks for the fast reply.
Answers.
1) About the "volumes available"
Using dxadvfs in OSF/1 V3.2C, she sees in the right side of the
screen this information.
2) About the grafical interface >> dxadvfs
3) To return back the volumes under advfs domains.
She said just selects and add under the domain desired, I'm not
used to this, but I can load the license for advfs utilities in our lab
machine to visualize exactly what she described.
4) Too many volumes under lots of domains.
In fact fact I'm not quite sure about this, may be lots of
plexes, and sub-disks, under some volumes.
5) For now I have only one of the commands you asked.
I'll post the contents of /etc/fstab, and volprint -s that I
already have.

Hmmm. When she starts up dxadvfs at other times (not immediately after a power outage system crash), do the LSM volumes show up as "available"? (If she has dxadvfs up and running all the time, have her exit and restart it.) When an LSM volume is available that should be in a domain, take a look at that domain and see if that volume is also in the domain. Have any problems arisen at reboot time other than seeing these volumes as "available"? Can you tell that I suspect the code in dxadvfs which determines whether or not a volume is available? :) (I'd better be suspicious of it, since I wrote it.) --Ken

Well, She said that they are not supposed to do shutdown, so she will have to wait until when it is possible to do it, in order to see if the problem happens or not. When it happens after a power failure, those LSM volumes appears available only, she can't see any also under some advfs domain. I've verified, and they have no patch at all for advfs. Do you think it would be the case to install all of them ? That is OSF350-272 ? Tks again MFAN(MCS/DEC@Rio)
| 9047.6 | DECWET::MARTIN | Thu Mar 06 1997 15:21 | 42 | ||
So right now, under "normal" conditions, when she starts up dxadvfs, it does NOT show the LSM volumes as available? You should probably install all the patches, but I'll be very surprised if they fix the problem. Having never heard of this problem before, I'm trying to figure out how it could possibly happen. The only thing I can think of is that the console may be set up to boot off of the wrong device somehow, and that's confusing things. I'm not familiar with how an LSM root device works. Please check the LSM documentation on root partitions and make sure that that's all set up correctly. If it is (at least as far as you can tell from a running system), then you should do the following: Keep all the information that you've already posted, which I assume is the "correct" setup. The next time the site gets a power failure, have the sysadmin record the following so that you can file an IPMT/QAR/whatever. From the console (the ">>>" prompt) "show bootdef_dev" or just "printenv". The specific command varies with the hardware, so I'm not sure exactly what you want to type, but you need to find out what device the machine is trying to boot off of. Then once the system's booted, but before "fixing" anything, get the output of all the things you've already posted, so we can see what's changed. The things I would be interested in, from an AdvFS viewpoint, are: "df" "cd /etc/fdmns ; showfdmn *" (I incorrectly said showfsets before). "ls -lR /etc/fdmns" "volprint -Av" There are probably some other things that an LSM engineer would want to look at, but I don't know what they would be. --Ken

Ok, For now I'll have to wait for her to mount everything back, because she is connected remotely and there are performance problems with this connection. Unfortunatelly she said that there is no one that could do the job locally. I'll reply later. Tks. MFAN(MCS/DEC@Rio)
| 9047.8 | Some more data... | VAXRIO::MANOEL | Manoel Abreu MCS/CSC-RIO | Thu Mar 13 1997 09:54 | 265 |
Well, the customer told me that was unable to put everything back,
so I asked her to do a shutdown -r now.
After the reboot there was lots of error messages and some advfs
doesn't mount, so I asked her to send me all the error messages.
The error messages comes out if you type mount -a, so again I asked
her to send me the output of: mount -a
volprint -Av
cd /etc/fdmns

Please have a look to the information below, are there any tips.
Thanks for your attention.

My best suspicion is that the root device at the console level is not the same as the root device that Digital UNIX thinks it's using. Your root file system is AdvFS over LSM, but the console (Alpha firmware) only knows about physical volumes. I don't know anywhere near enough about LSM to give further advice. Sorry.

I'd highly recommend opening a CLD/IPMT case about this problem. Then you'll get official support from someone who really does know their stuff.
