9032.0. "Unaligned access & Core dump of Netscape navigator with Korean" by NETRIX::"[email protected]" (seung-joo lee) Tue Mar 04 1997 23:26

Hi.

Netscape browser 3.0 or 3.01 gold which is bundled in Digital
Unix 4.0 have problems when I run with Korean language input server.
For using the Korean input Method Server we should set LANG to "ko_KR"
after installing Woldwide subset(korean). And run real-netscape
of /usr/bin/X11 directory.
Then, netscape display the warning messages "Unaligned access ...". and it's
unstable.
I think this message means it have a serious problem due to the worng porting
of the navigator.

Especially some accesses even lead to core dump of navigator. For instance,
after I login http://www-ts.digital.co.kr:7777/ that is the admin server of
the Enterprise Server, my navigator is gone from my screen and dump core file.

Because the above reasons korean customers who are using Digital Unix's
netscape
can NOT set LANG to ko_KR and can NOT input korean characters.
They have complained againt the bugs to me. Sun's navigator is good for
korean.

I heard digital engineer ported the navigator at Netscape Communications
Corporation and Netscape is not responsible for this problem when I met
Netscape
guys in US.

The following is termical capture.

It's changed so many times none of us remembers for sure either, but I'm pretty
sure it's NOT OSG anymore.

The web page at www.zk3.dec.com calls us the 'UBPG' - UNIX Base Product
Group. The next level up is called the 'UNIX Business Segment'.

Whatever.
9032.4Ocassional Unaligned accesses in default localeDECC::SULLIVANJeff SullivanWed Mar 05 1997 13:2612
FWIW, I've seen ocassional Unaligned accesses while running Netscape Gold V3.01
on Digital UNIX V4.0 using the default locale. The problems generally don't
crash Netscape. I haven't been able to reproduce them, so I haven't reported
them.

Also, the version of Netscape installed on my V4.0 system by default was this:

OSFNETSCAPE400 installed Netscape Navigator V1.12I (Windows Applications)

I needed to install V3.01 Gold myself.

9032.5Can't reproduce the bug.NETRIX::"[email protected]"Seung Jae LeeFri Mar 07 1997 15:0824
We tried to reproduce the bug but we haven't found anything wrong when
running it in our machines.

To further investigate the problem, we need more information.

Exactly what version of UNIX are you running?
(You can check the first line of the file /etc/motd)

Are you running CDE? If so, are you logging into CDE under the ko_KR
locale by using the OPTIONS button in the login box? Or are you setting
ko_KR in another manner?

Do you always have the same problem when running netscape? Same error
messages? Or does this only happen at times?

A step-by-step procedure of everything you do from the time you log in until
you get the error will be very helpful.

Thanks,

Hi. Seung Jae Lee

First Thank you for your effort.
I use UNIX V4.0A and CDE has default ko_KR login box...

My /etc/motd;
     -----------------
     cat /etc/motd
     -----------------
     Digital UNIX V4.0A (Rev. 464); Tue Dec 17 13:00:14 KST 1996
Digital UNIX Korean Support V4.0A (rev. 3.1)

The installation software has successfully installed your system.

There are logfiles that contain a record of your installation.
     These are:

        /var/adm/smlogs/install.cdf - configuration description file
        /var/adm/smlogs/install.log - general log file
/var/adm/smlogs/install.FS.log - file system creation logs
        /var/adm/smlogs/setld.log - log for the setld(8) utility
        /var/adm/smlogs/fverify.log - verification log file

CDE was set to ko_KR (default screen is ko_KR, I do't use OPTION button);
    -----------------
CDE default to korean & change Hangul(Korean) toggle key
    -----------------
    /.X11Startup: /usr/bin/X11/xmodmap $HOME/.dxkeycaps
    /.dtprofile: xmodmap $HOME/.dxkeycaps
    /.dxkeycaps: line 148-149: keycode 0x39 = F19
                               keycode 0x58 = F20
    - set to F19 in input method setting window (hangul start)
    - set to F19 in input method setting window (hangul stop)
    - set to F20 in input method setting window (hanja start)
    /etc/dt/config/Xconfig: line 87: Dtlogin*language: ko_KR

Unaligned access messages ALWAYS display.
Sometimes navigator go out from the screen.
Core dump problem ALWAYS happens when I'm trying to connect the Netscape
WWW Server admin page(after successful login access prompt).

You'd better get into my workstation with a user.
I will send your account password to [email protected]. Then, you can
see my environment in detail.

After login as root at my console, invoke DECterm, change to /usr/bin/X11,
invoke ./real-netscape.

Best regards.

P.S.: The below is not navigator problem
but I think another korean(or multibyte language) problem.
When I try to rebuild kernel. Some files have illegal multibyte
character so I have to set LANG to "C" instead of "ko_KR" and
      rebild kernel.
The message is "An invalid multibyte character was encountered ..".
and the file I found is /usr/sys/data/pcxal_data.c which has
illegal character within comment string around 1874 line.
Could you report this problem to proper team?

9032.7possible cause for unaligned accessesHYDRA::DONSBACHJeff Donsbach, Software Partner Engineering, DTN 297-6862Mon Mar 10 1997 12:4410
If you are running Open3D 4.0 or 4.1, that could possibly explain
the unaligned access messages. I won't get into the details, but
the fix for that part of the problem is to upgrade to Open 3D 4.2.

What kind of graphics card does the system have? There have been
some flakey problems seen with Netscape and the ZLXp-L[1|2]
    graphics card(s).

9032.8what happens in C locale ? SMURF::WENDYMon Mar 10 1997 14:196
Have you tried running this version of Netscape in the C locale rather
than in the Korean locale ? You can do this simply by setting LANG=C
    prior to starting Netscape.

Do you experience the same problem when you run netscape with users other than
root?

Did you install Netscape 3.0 into your machine?
I'm just confused about this since I believe Netscape 1.12 is bundled with
4.0A.

Yes, you right, Great!
I installed Open3D 4.1 some months ago because test another problem.
After delete it in my workstation today unaligned messages are NOT displayed.
In my thought the unaligned access problem will be close if Open 3D 4.2
work well.
My customer's AS255 has to install Open 3D beacuse system hangs up
when set InlayColor in CDE wallpaper. (Hmm, bug on bug.) See 1770.3 in
conference alphastation on wrksys.
I don't have 4.2 version...
Thanks a lot, Jeff D.

I have AS200 workstation with ZLXp-E and my customer AS255 with 3D30.
But both system have core-dump problem.

Of course, C locale is No problem. No message. No core-dump.

Yes, When I try with normal user the same core dumped.

Sorry. I did not mention that I install navigator3.0gold from
"http://www.unix.digital.com/products/internet/legal_ng.html"
last year. Now the URL has 3.01 gold version. And 3.01 has same core problem.
If you want to get my 3.0 gold it is in "ftp:/dk0193.dek.dec.com/pub/digital
/internet/Web_Browser/Netscape/v3.00g_os_bundled/navgold_v30.tar.gz"
------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------

I found two another core-dump seqences.
With Unix4.0a, navigator 3.00gold & ko_KR locale.
(size: -rwxr-xr-x 1 root system 7192576 /usr/bin/X11/real-netscape)

1. 1) open URL http://www.interpia.net/interpiahome1225/search.html.
   2) type some any characters into the first input box.
   3) then push the right button of the box for search.
   4) you can see Security "Warning message" box then select
      "Continue Submission" button.
   5) core dumped. (Not always. sometimes 3 search try)

9032.12I'm seeing sporadic Netscape crashesHYDRA::DONSBACHJeff Donsbach, Software Partner Engineering, DTN 297-6862Mon Mar 17 1997 16:5119

I am now also getting sporadic reports of Netscape 3.0 crashing now
that my ISV is upgrading to Unix 4.0B. I have seen it myself, though
the crashes are not always consistent.

One user has told me that bringing up a Netscape Mail window and
resizing it, he can crash it pretty consistently. In the case I saw
crash, it crashed in a specific Web page that had frames in it.
I looked at the core file and the only function call I could see on
the stack was "XtPending()". I started up Netscape again and tried
loading that same Web page and it didn't crash the second (or third)
    time.

Are there any updates/patches available for Netscape 3.01 over and
above the version that is shipped with Unix 4.0B ??

    Thanks,
    -Jeff D.

After install IOSKONETSCAPE410.tar, the core problems
that I mentioned is resolved.

I installed one into several Unix4.0A or Unix4.0B
machines. And some people have used Navigator 3.0 gold
for 2 days. There are no core problems.

I've announced this module to TS and MCS in Korea today.
And I hope that you continuously support the I18N module
for the next Navigator versions like Communicator.

Thanks a lot Brian Simons of UEG/I18N and others.

I have two another problems.

First,
Memory fault occures in UNIX 4.0A and 4.0B Navigator 3.0 gold.
About 1 time in an hour.
I can not reproduce it intentionally.
It semmd to has no connection with installation of IOSKONETSCAPE410.tar

The messages are below.

Second,

About java console.
with Unix4.0B
When I pushed the Options -> Show Java Console,
navigator displaied nothing.

I saw some articles in the Notes about Java. Someone said
Java will be no problem in UNIX4.0B.
I did not try Java without WORLDWIDE(korean) subset. If you
can do Java & Java console does that mean that WORLDWIDE
effects this problem?

Is there one for Japanese version (IOSJPNETSCAPE410) ?
I have installed IOSJPNETSCAPE410 and OSFNETSCAPE410 in my
AlphaStation 200 4/100 runing Digital UNIX V4.0B.
When I tried to access particular site (AltaVista), the
Navigator always dies. So far this is 100% reproducible.

Did you invoke /usr/bin/X11/netscape or /usr/bin/X11/real-netscape ?
If you invoke /usr/bin/X11/netscape, the Java problem should not occur.

In response to the "p.s." of reply .6:
Try building the kernel in the C locale. It should build properly.

The problem you reported in pcxal_data.c will be fixed in
the next major release of DIGITAL UNIX.

Sure. I invoked /usr/bin/X11/netscape for real-netscape.
I read all of document about real-netscape, libXt.so
LD_LIBRARY_PATH etc. I tried all of methods. But failed.

This has been an often-reported problem, although the frequency of the
core dump seems to vary widely. The problem has been reported to
Netscape and is regarded by them as a "must fix" for the next version.

This is definitely the Java problem that .18 mentions. If your
navigator binary is using /usr/lib/netscape/libXt.so instead of
the default libXt, the Java problem should not occur. Maybe the
/usr/bin/X11/netscape script isn't working properly? Try setting
LD_LIBRARY_PATH to /usr/lib/netscape and then invoking
/usr/bin/X11/real-netscape to see if that will make a difference.

By the way, this problem is also on Netscape's must fix list
for the next version of the browser.

Are you using an up-to-date java_30 ?
Usually it is located on $HOME/.netscape/.
If it is a symbolic link to /usr/lib/netscape/java_30, it's OK.
But if it is an actual file, it may be too old so that
you should delete it and after that invoke /usr/bin/X11/netscape,
which should create the symbolic link and Jave should work fine.

I tried to invoke real-netscape with LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/netscape
but It DID NOT work java console.

/.netscape/java_30 was linked to /usr/lib/netscape/java_30.
And it was 723652 bytes size. It's new.

I know what all of you mean about LD_LIBRARY_PATH, libXt.so, java_30
and /usr/bin/X11/netscape script. But java does not work.
I don't know why any korean can NOT use java. I have not seen who
can use java applet.

9032.22Java Can Not work in Korean WORLDWIDENNTPD::"[email protected]"Seung-Joo LeeFri May 02 1997 05:2011
I've installed UNIX 4.0B on my workstation.
When I just installed OS Vol.1 CD-ROM the netscape 3.0 work for
java well. After I installed Associated Product CD-ROM's
WORLDWIDE(Korean Locale) netscape does not work.
I did nothing except installing and rebooting.
So this is firmly BUG, I think.
And I am going to report to QAR with this situation.

Of course you, American, don't have to install i18n subset.

There is korean locale system in the Associate Product CD-ROM.
It is in the Digital UNIX paper box filled with OS, F/W CD-ROM etc.
It's for Korean input/output, Korean font sets etc. and All systems
in Korea install it.

Anyway, the time of not working java is just after I installed
Korean Locale on my system disk.

I wrote this story to QAR.

But I did not get any answer from QAR yet.
