9015.0. "? Need help with Japanese characters and CDE" by IOSG::rj.reo.dec.com::Tron::Merewood (Richard, DTN 830-3352, REO2/F-C2) Mon Mar 03 1997 10:13

We are supporting a partner in the UK who is testing a large commercial
application system. Currently they are attempting to test the product's
support for multi-byte characters; Japanese in fact.

They have done this kind of testing before, but are having problems with
V4.0a. This us what they report:

"The main problem we are having is that the tester cannot find how to input
Japanese characters. The difference this time around is that we are running
with the Common Desktop Environment. On the 3.2C system we simply set the
locale and everything worked fine. On the CDE we set the locale before we
login and the text in window title and pull downs come out in Japanese but
anything typed on the keyboard comes out in English.

"The information we need then is how to get the keyboard input to be
interpretted as Japanese characters."

Any suggestions please? Thanks,

	Richard.

It sounds like the input method daemon is not getting started. Check
out section 5.3.3. Using Input Methods of the CDE Companion book.

If you choose Japanese locale before you login in, you should see a
small window at the upper-right corner of the screen, that's the
Japanese input method: dxjim. If you didn't see it, then the input
method didn't get started. If you see it, you can use Shift-Space to
toggle between ascii input mode and Japanese Kanji input mode.

If you don't see the Input Method getting started, I am not able to give a
answer based on the information you provided. We need more information, like
what terminal or what application you are typing in? Anything special you did
other than choosing the Japanese locale?

Yan
