9008.0. "A new Conference?" by TPOVC::MOBBYLIN (Network Navigator) Sun Mar 02 1997 10:20

    Hi Moderator,
Now it counts over 9000 topics. It seems to regenerate a new Digital
UNIX conference and name old one as something.

    regards,
    Mobby.

Why? Starting from scratch will result in even more people
asking the same old questions again (ie. even those who
search for an existing topic first will now not find ...)
9008.2May be because it is slow?...QCAV02::NRHEGDET&E or R&D !?Mon Mar 03 1997 21:3410

This may be because it is slow. But If one can use it from
altavista notes gateway It is very fast.

Well it could be do for a compression, but I don't notice
a problem with it being slow. More likely the slowness is
due to a slow network connection?

> But If one can use it from altavista notes gateway It is very fast.

I don't believe there is such a beast as an AltaVista NOTES
gateway. There are a copy of WWW=>NOTES gateways that are
midnight hacks however. And neither one of those would be
faster because at least the most popular WWW=>NOTES gateway
doesn't cache connections to the NOTES Server(s) so has to
establish a new connection everytime (plus some additional
connection establishment protocol overhead). Never mind the
new connection for each note between the browser and the
gateway server (some browsers do support connection re-use, but
that needs server support as well in order to use, and the
gateway server doesn't support it the last I knew).

For OpenVMS, there has been renamed up to 11 volumes.

My guess is that the "Altavista Notes Gateway" was meant to
mean the AltaVista Search Engine for notes, on URL
http://altavista.notes.lkg.dec.com:8000/.

	And your point is?

The context of the inquiry may be more around searching the notes file
for a particular issue. I find this to be slow. Functions like
NEXT UNSEEN, entering notes, etc. are not as slow.

I'm guessing that the point of having a new notes file is that most
of the old notes deal with issues that are no longer relevant.
Searching for information on a current issue would not have to wade
through all those old notes because there wouldn't be as many notes
to search through, making such functions much faster.

My 2.

Yes, but...people who use the WWW are accustomed to it being slow, so when
accessing NOTES via the WWW you don't notice that it's not fast... 8-) ;-)

Well I asked the author of .0 as far as my 1st reply in .1
"why" they wanted to do this. There answer was "because
the VMS notesfile has done it many times"!

> I'm guessing that the point of having a new notes file is that most

	you're right, that's a "guess", but not necessarily a correct one :-)

So to save some lazy folks a little time, we'll instead have
to answer questions we've already answered all over again?
Sounds like a USENET mentality setting in :-(

As has been mentioned, there are several search engines available,
the AV NOTES engine mentioned previously which covers all notesfiles,
and search engines like COMET which cover work-related notesfile only
(as well as STARS, QAR's, etc databases).
9008.10Use these for notes. It is faster I bet...QCAV02::NRHEGDET&E or R&D !?Wed Mar 05 1997 00:0718
    Hi All !
I suggest to moderator we should not archive the articles like it is
    done for VMSNOTES.

I suggest Use comet or altavista search engine.

     For comet:
       http://comet.alf.dec.com

For Altavista search engine (for notes)

      http://altavista.notes.lkg.dec.com:8000

Hope this will help us. I use most of the times altavista to search
notes and it is quite fast for me.
