8996.0. "Panic at mount CD ( cdfs) on 4.0b " by MDR01::ARANCHA (MCS Madrid) Fri Feb 28 1997 05:41

Hi,
My customer has a problem with a software CD about astrofisic programs.
On Alpha 4000 with DigitalUNIX 4.0B, when he mounts one CD with the following
command :
	# mount -t cdfs -r -o noversion /dev/rz4c /mnt
the alpha does a panic when he executes the commands:
	# cd /mnt
	# ls

I'm waiting for the crash files.
He has confired the options CDFS on /sys/conf/HOSTNAME.
If he mounts the cd without option "-t cdfs", it can't mount.

The customer has done the same in another AXp with DUNIX 3.2D-1 and the cd
can read O.K. With Lynux, he doesn't any problems.

Anybody has any idea ?
I'm reading the release notes 4.0b, but I can't find anything about cdfs.

Thanks in the advance.
Arancha

8996.1"Unaligned kernel space access from kernel mode "MDR01::ARANCHAMCS MadridMon Mar 03 1997 04:30521
    Hi,
I have the crash files, now.
On the crash-data.0 file I can find the panic string:

"Unaligned kernel space access from kernel mode"

    I add the crash-data file.

Thanks very much for your help,
    Arancha

    Arancha,

did you send your crash-data file to the CANASTA Mail Server ? If so,
please indicate that in your note, so we won't ask you again... If not,
please read note 8919 and send your crash-data file to CANASTA...

Please ALWAYS send your crash-data files to the CANASTA Mail Server as
a FIRST STEP during crash analysis.

    Volker.

    Arancha,

I've sent your crash-data file to CANASTA for you and there is no RULE
or SOLUTION in CANASTA, but there is ONE crash with the SAME FOOTPRINT !

Customer=USEG indicates, that this crash has been picked up from the
crash directories on GURU and the nodename of the crashed machine
indicates, that it was a system within the building where UNIX
engineering resides... The case-id unfortunately does not map to a QAR
    or IPMT.

I suggest to ESCALATE this problem via IPMT. USEG is committed to
CANASTA and rules based on the problems described in the patch README
files are being written ! So if they don't properly document their
solutions, they would have to live with additional IPMTs.

    Volker.

    Thanks for all, Volker.
I'm going to escalate it via IMPT.

This problem appears to be the same as the problem described by
QAR #48489/ CLD USG-03694.

In this case, the panic occurred because because of the way the
directory records are recorded on disk. A variable-length
directory name is a member of the structure, and the structures
are recorded sequentially on disk. Therefore, a structure can
fall on an unaligned address, and cause a panic when accessed.

A fix for this problem has been submitted to the current
development effort, and the UNIX Support Engineering group has
a patch forthcoming for currently supported releases.

The original problem report stated that the system would not
panic if the disk was mounted with the command:

	mount -r -t cdfs -o noversion,rrip /dev/rz4c /cdrom

This command forces a different code path to be executed, and
may allow you to avoid a panic while you are waiting for a patch.

    Maggie,
I opened the case IPMT yesterday, because the customer needs a patch.
He has the information about mount the cd with rrip option.
    Thanks for all,
