8947.0. "DE450 as tu1 and ewa0 as tu0 on AS255/300" by ANNECY::CHALUMEAU () Tue Feb 25 1997 04:33

	What are the rules for allocation of tu numbers with UNIX 4.0b
        on AlphaStation 255/300.

        a/ On a station with a fddi controller,
           the Ethernet Controller of the mother board ewao is allocated as tu0
           and the fddi is fta0.

        b/ On station with a DE450 as second controller,the system shows
           - the ethernet controller of the mother board ewa0 as tu1
           - the DE450 as tu0

        1/ what is the logic for the name allocation of tu0, tu1... etc ?

        2/ Is this logic different on V3.2 ?

        3/ our customer wants to keep the configuration unchanged among his
           systems. How can we do to keep ewa0 as tu0 and the DE450 as tu1 ?

        thanks,
        Jean-Claude

    I don't have a solution for you.

    But, it's all a matter of the order that the adapters are discovered in
    the system. I believe that it really depends on the platform for which
    adapter is discovered first.

    You can easily change the order of units by switching the PCI slots
    that the adapters are in. However, you can't do this with the
    integrated Ethernet...

8947.2We rebuilded a new kernel...ANNECY::CHALUMEAUTue Mar 04 1997 10:4012
	Thanks,

	Finally we have modified the config file in /sys/conf
        with the desired allocations of tu0 and tu1, and rebuilded
        a new kernel.

    I was actually refering to physically swapping the cards, not changing
    the software.

    Interesting approach though, let me know if it works.

8947.4Yes, it worksANNECY::CHALUMEAUMon Mar 10 1997 04:232
    Apparently, yes.
