8906.0. "could not open default font 'fixed' 4.0b" by KERNEL::NICHOLSONA (one suite too many can cause truth decay) Thu Feb 20 1997 09:42

    Hi,

A customer has installed 4.0b of Digital Unix. If he uses Xdec to
set the resolution to 1280x798 the monitor (vrt17-w3) goes black
and appears to power down and then backup again.

The system has a s3 trio card. xdm-errors reports the following

failed to set default font path
    '/usr/lib/X11/fonts/decwin/100dpi/,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/,/usr/lib/X11/font`
    Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed'
xdm error (pid 973): IO Error in XOpenDisplay
xdm error (pid 969): Server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly: 1
xdm error (pid 969): Display :0 cannot be opened
failed to set default font path
    '/usr/lib/X11/fonts/decwin/100dpi/,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/,/usr/lib/X11/font`
    Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed'
xdm error (pid 975): IO Error in XOpenDisplay

If he specifies Xdec -fp and specifies a list of fonts same as above
then he can use 1280 resolution.

Can anyone help on this ?

    Thanks
    Avril

8906.1Possibly font subsets missingNETRIX::"[email protected]"Paul GristThu Feb 20 1997 14:0622
There are 2 different font subsets to install, with s3trio
you'll get the 75dpi because the default resolution is
1024x768. If you try to upgrade the resolution to
1280x1024 using the -screen option for the X server
(see http://www.zk3.dec.com/uhs/graphics/FAQ/resolution_vsync.txt)
then you need the 100dpi fonts.

To save space these are not installed by default, so you
may need to install the subset from your Digital UNIX
distribution media. They should be there on a Factory
installed system. To verify if you have them try this:

# setld -i | grep -i 100dpi
OSFFONT15400 installed DECwindows 100dpi Fonts (Windowing
Environment)

Let me know if this was the problem,

thanks,

Paul
