8904.0. "postscript printing on digital unix ? how ?" by XFMV01::AJITK () Thu Feb 20 1997 07:38

Hi

A customer wants to use an HP LaserJet 3P printer for
printing postscript files generated by ANSIS package
running on Digital Unix system.

How can this be done ?

Is any additional product such as System V environment
required ?

Thanks in advance.

Most (maybe all) HP printers support PCL which is not the same as postscript.
Some HP printers offer postscript support as an option. I think the basic
problem your customer is facing is that the HP 3P is no a postscript
printer which means that you can not print postscript files. SVE includes
the System V print subsystem, but that won't allow a PCL printer to print
postscript. I'm not aware of any product that will.

I am not familiar with the ANSIS package but your first alternative would be
to see if it can support the HP printer in question. Failing that you
may be able to upgrade the printer to be postscript capable but that would
have to be persued with HP.

8904.2Postscript to PCLQUARRY::reevesJon Reeves, UNIX compiler groupThu Feb 20 1997 11:132
The free software package "Ghostscript" can convert PostScript to PCL (I know,
I'm using it with my IIIP at home). Look on gatekeeper for it.

How is the quality of that solution? I assume GS creates a raster using its PS
interpreter and then converts the raster to PCL. That of course will work but
the quality of the output would not be the same as printing PS on a real PS
printer (or generating PCL and printing that on a real PCL printer). The
customer really has to get a PS printer or get the application to generate PCL
directly.

Given that the LJ3P is only a 300 dpi printer, the output has always looked
just fine to me. I can't tell GS-processed output from the native stuff my
Windows box produces (I've got 2 machines on an auto-switch to that printer).
