8898.0. "UniCensus" by BIGUN::nessus.cao.dec.com::Mayne (Churchill's black dog) Wed Feb 19 1997 20:03

Since (as far as I can figure) the original idea was mine, I'll allow my
battered ego to post this. See also http://decatl.alf.dec.com/ucr/UCdoc/.

(Since some of the code looks exactly like my original, but my original
history and author lines have been removed, where's my attribution in the
source? 8-)

      PROBLEM:

There are currently two tools (Checkit and Unicensus) which can gather
and provide hardware, software, and system configuration information
for use in isolating problems on Digital UNIX systems.

MCS reports that a number of its people are not clear as to which tool
they should use to collect information for cases escalated to the UNIX
Support Engineering Group (USEG). MCS has asked USEG for its position.

      RESOLUTION/WORKAROUND:

At this time, Checkit is required by USEG for cases escalated to USEG.

Any change in this requirement will be communicated in a separate Blitz.

      OTHER COMMENTS

Checkit is the original data gathering tool produced by USEG.

SysCheck is another data gathering tool developed within the UNIX
Business Segment. It has recently become the responsibility of USEG.

UniCensus, developed by MCS, was built on top of SysCheck. UniCensus is
currently being improved to collect additional information and to gather
various files (e.g., crash data files, binary error logs, syslog.dated,
etc.) into one tar ball on a customer's system. After this new
functionality has been tested, a new version of UniCensus will be made
available and UniCensus will become THE tool recommended by USEG. At
that same time, Checkit will be retired. Notification of this transition
will be made in a separate Blitz.
