Please could someone confirm that the following configuration is legal.
---------- is S/E SCSI ======== is Diff SCSI
The S/E bus is terminated on the PMAZC and the DWZZA.
The Diff bus is terminated via external terminators on the tri-link
attached to each DWZZA.
The systems are DEC3000-800, operating system is UNIX V3.2C
SYSTEM A SYSTEM B
(PMAZC bus 2)----(DWZZA)======(HSZ50)=====(DWZZA)----(PMAZC bus 2)
(PMAZC bus 3)----(DWZZA)======(HSZ50)=====(DWZZA)----(PMAZC bus 3)
The reason for asking is that the customer running this configuration
keeps system A powered on but not booted (ie. at >>>), and system B is
booted into UNIX, the plan is that if they have a problem with system
B, they shut it down and then reboot system A using the same operating
image.
Now System B works fine, but when ever they boot System A it crashes
after a short time (1-3 hours).
The system always crashes with "(sim94_get_ws) invalid T/L!" does this
mean that the target/lun was invalid ?, I have attached a crash-data
file for further information.
Questions I am currently trying to getting answers for are,
1) Cables - are they BN or BC type
2) PMAZC - are they at rev V1.8 or later
3) DWZZA-AA - are they at rev E01 or later
4) The length of each S/E segment
5) The length of the diff segment
6) Is there anything in the error or system logs.
Sorry this is a bit vague, but it was one of those typical situations
where you need to come up with an action plan yesterday without all the
facts, ANY help or suggestions would be appreciated.

| Yes, I know that panic. It generally happens because of a
bus integrity problem. 99.9999999...% of the time, when we ask
the scsi chip which device is trying to talk to us, we get a
good, valid and real answer. However, there may be times when
we get a value back from the scsi chip that doesn't make sense
(like target -1). In this case, we know something is BROKEN,
so we panic. This is the panic you hit.
Interesting you bring this up right now. We're in the process
of changing that code to just log an error, and reset the bus
so it can try to continue. There are no guarantees that we can
continue, but atleast we'll try. Afterall, it was some broken
H/W that got us here in the first place.
If you can't find/fix the broken cable/dwzza/adapter/terminator
(I'd guess it's between the HSZ50 and System A) you could file
an IPMT to ask for a patch. This could also just be a cable
length problem. Remember:
PMAZC----DWZZA - max 3 meters (must be BN cables, not BC09).
DWZZA----DWZZA - max 25 meters.
If you have a dual HSZ50, then you must also count the
length of the interconnecting cable. The HSZ50 itself
doesn't count for any length.
I also assume you read Page 10 of the HSZ50 release notes, and
made the necessary change to the system to allow the HSZ50 to
work properly? If you don't know, do a file command and look
at the output device type. If it's HSZsomething, they you did
make the change. If it's RZxx, then you didn't.

type with the file command and go over the SCSI bus very carefully.

The crash-data file has been sent to CANASTA as case-id DUNIX_8897.
Whenever you run into a panic, please obtain the crash-data file and
send it to the CANASTA Mail Server:
# Mail -s "Diagnose" [email protected] < crash-data.n
CANASTA will analyse the panic footprint and reply with a solution or
at least show you ALL cases with SIMILAR FOOTPRINTS from the CANASTA
world-wide case database.
