Hello,
We encountered the following problems during the installation of two
AlphaServer's 4100 with Digital UNIX 3.2G
We always get the message: Error reading syserr file.
when trying to read the errorlog file using uerf
We already created new errlog ( /var/adm/binary.errlog ) by removing
the original file and forcing binlogd to reread the default config
file.
Also rebooting the system after removing the original file forces the
creation of a new errlog file.
In both cases the file stays corrupt ???
Important to mention is that reading the file with dia will skip the
corrupt part apparantly:
snm011 # dia
Event record: 0 of file: /usr/adm/binary.errlog is corrupted.

Event record: 5 of file: /usr/adm/binary.errlog is corrupted.

Event record: 12 of file: /usr/adm/binary.errlog is corrupted.
Recovering...
Event record: 47 of file: /usr/adm/binary.errlog is corrupted.
Recovering...
DECevent V2.2
Also common on both systems is the that we get the error in the
original errlog file at the end of a system boot:
uerf -R

Error reading syserr file.
**************************************
Both systems are installed with with KZPDA local SCSI controllers for
sys & swap and KZPSA & HSZ50 for the data disks ( we will build an ASE
configuration ).
This problem is also very nasty in such that the the Polycenter
Watchdog agent monitoring the CPU ( psw_sensor_syswd ) is using 100%
of the cpu trying to read the errlog file.
I found that this kind of problem ( with HSZ40 ) was already QAR'd in
July '94. ( HSZ40 conference note 36.1 )
and in the Digital UNIX conference note 7908 there is mention of
possible bugs in possible device(s) trying to write to the errlog file.
Any ideas ?
Philippe VANDENBRANDEN / OMS Brussels.
