8849.1 | 'diskconfig' is a cludge to steer ... | VIRGIN::SUTTER | Who are you ??? - I'm BATMAN !!! | Tue Feb 18 1997 06:23 | 25 |
| The 'diskconfig' GUI is in my point of view far to cumbersome, restrictive and
downright counter-intuitive in my point of view.
It's also counting Megabytes Units in 1000000 bytes instead of 1024*1024 bytes
(everybody working with computers professionally knows this ...!-O).
Btw: QAR#46087 is open for this for ages but no answer (be it positive or negative)
so far ... :-(
I recommend customers having problems with 'diskconfig' to use the old
single-user character interface for partitioning disks; there at least you know
what you get ... :-(
This beeing said (it should stir up enough reaction to eventually fix the
shortcomings of 'diskconfig') I have found 'diskconfig' difficult to use when
there is already a partition on the disk. So clear the existing parition first
(in the non-gui mode I'm afraid) and try again.
This brings up the idea that 'diskconfig' could use a button to destroy an
existing partition on a given disk and start over, even if you have to ask the
(dumb?) administrator umpteen times if he is really, really, really, really sure
wether he wants to do this ... ;-).
Regards,
Arnold

I've recently started with DEC, and will be addressing diskconfig problems.
It is known that diskconfig has 'usability issues'. There have been some
usability studies done and the recommendations will be implemented.
Thank you for your input.

| It's moving! Nice to see that things are starting to change for
a change. It's not THE problem on Earth but it's annoying to find
out that people are scared away from a utility that they always
complained that it wasn't there just because it can't be handled
in an easy and intuitive way.
Maybe it was a step too big to take in one leap ... ;-()
